A detailed work reviewing the lives and works of many artists who have studied English country life and sport mainly associated with hunting and racing. First edition. "With a Foreword by Sir Theodore Cook and Twenty-Seven Illustrations in Colour and Seventy-Six in Black & White." Covering a large time span; from Francis Barlow in the reign of Charles I and ending with J. F. Herring and the younger Wolstenholme. As the subject is Art in its relations with Sport and Sport in its patronage of Art this long period is particularly interesting because its changes and improvements mark a continuous evolution unbroken by revolutionary fashions and their reactions. Rebacked in green cloth gilt title to the spine and gilt embossed picture of a horse and rider to the front board. Externally boards are sound with only some light wear to the extremities.
