A finely bound work containing the first and second volumes of Walter Shaw Sparrow's biographical studies of these renowned sports illustrators Henry Alken George Stubbs and Ben Marshall. In a sumptuous half morocco binding with cloth covered boards. Comprising of 'Henry Alken' 1927 and 'George Stubbs and Ben Marshall' 1929 which together form ' The Sport of Our Fathers'. With an introduction to 'Henry Alken' by Sir Theodore Cook and an introduction to 'George Stubbs and Ben Marshall' by E D Cuming. First editions of both works. Both volumes are illustrated with nine coloured plates to the first volume and four coloured plates to the second volume. Several half-tone illustrations to both works. Collated complete. Walter Shaw Sparrow was a notable Welsh writer on art and architecture with a special interest in British sporting artists. This work looks at the lives and works of Henry Alken George Stubbs and Ben Marshall. A fascinating study with both volumes seldom found together here in a beautiful bright binding. In a half crushed morocco binding with cloth covered boards. Externally very smart with a few light marks to the cloth boards. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright. Scattered spots to the first and last few pages. Otherwise just the occasional light spots. Near Fine Williams and Norgate unknown

In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally smart. Cloth is a little discoloured with some marks as is usual with a light colour cloth.
