'The Mistress with Other Select Poems of Abraham Cowley 1619-1667' edited by John Sparrow for the Nonesuch Press. The Nonesuch Press specialised in limited edition and private press. They were founded by Francis Meynell his second wife Vera Mendel and their friend David Garnett. Their aspiration was for their publications to be aligned with the same aesthetic standards as the private press movement. They were unusual as they used a small Albion press to design the books but had them printed by commercial printers. In doing so books with the quality of a fine-press were produced but available to a wider audience at lower prices. This edition consists of 1050 numbered copies on Dutch rag paper printed and made in Scotland by R. & R. Clark for the Nonesuch Press in Monotype Bodoni. This is number 462. First edition thus. Abraham Cowley was an English poet born in the City of London late in 1618. He was one of the leading English poets of the 17th century with fourteen printings of his Works published between 1668 and 1721. In 1647 a collection of his love verses entitled 'The Mistress' was published. In a buckram binding. Externally generally smart but with slight wear to extremities and marks to boards. Internally firmly bound. Bright and generally clean throughout but with spotting to text block edges and foxing to endpapers. Pages untrimmed. Very Good The Nonesuch Press hardcover

A limited edition of this work published by Nonesuch Press 311 of 1050 printed on Dutch rag paper in the publisher's original cloth binding. Abraham Cowley was a seventeenth-century English poet one of the most popular and influential of his era. Cowley showed poetical promise from a young age publishing his first collection 'Poetical Blossoms' in 1633 when he was fifteen. He went into exile as a Royalist during the Civil War during which time he wrote a history of the Civil War. This collection includes 'The Mistress' 'Friendship in Absence' 'A Dream of Elysium' 'The Vain Love' 'The Rich Rival' 'My Fate' 'Impossibilities' 'Counsel' 'Sors Virgiliana' and many more. With a portrait of Abraham Cowley to the title page drawn and engraved by John Hall from a painting from the collection of Horace Walpole. Illustrated throughout with black-and-white photography. Top edge gilt. Bound in dark blue cloth with a grain-texture gilt lettering stamped on the front board along with a paper label that appears as though fashioned from the subject's bookplate; gilt lettering on spine. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper and signed by her "Louise / Washington DC 1926". In addition she added a manuscript note to a photo caption noting her husband was honored at a USNA class reunion a year before his death. An account of the loss of the U.S.S. Tacoma off the east coast of Mexico. Rebels under Adolfo de la Huerta involved in political upheaval in Mexico had removed the fixtures from a lighthouse; lacking that guidance the Tacoma ran upon shoals and was then beset by a storm in which Captain Herbert George Sparrow and crew members drowned. This account by Sparrow's widow is mostly epistolary but includes official USN and personal accounts of the wreck. Curiously for several days la Huerta's revolutionaries stood a 24-hour honor guard at Sparrows bier. A handsome copy. The Stratford Company, Publishers hardcover
