PORTFOLIO CONDITION: New/Mint the set.<br /> <br /> Bastard Countryside collects together 15 years worth of exploration within the British landscape dwelling on what Victor Hugo called the 'bastard countryside': "somewhat ugly but bizarre made up of two different natures". Friend's large-format colour images scrutinise these in-between unkempt and often surreal marginal areas of the country highlighting frictions between the pastoral sublime and the discarded often polluted reality of the present. Starting from a classical landscape tradition Friend's meticulous 5x4 photographs are given heightened effect through exaggerations of colour and composition embodying friction between British pastoral ideals and present reality. In particular Friend follows moments in which the expected narrative of the landscape is rudely interrupted: often through leakage pollution or the wreckage and containment of nature. In his accompanying essay writer Robert Macfarlane describes Bastard Countryside as "a vision par excellence of our synthetic 'modern nature'- produced by assemblage and entanglement rather than purity and distinction". Contained within Friend's photographs are "hard questions . about what kinds of landscape one might wish either to pass through or to live in; about what versions of 'modern nature' might be worth fighting for and why." Robin Friend b.1983 is a London-based photographer who grew up in Melbourne Australia. He divides his time between his fine art practice and commissioned work. Recent projects include the award-winning books Sanctuary: Britain's Artists and their Studios and Art Studio America Thames & Hudson 2011-13; a collaborative choreographic work for the BBC Winged Bull in the Elephant Case 2017 with Wayne McGregor; and a National Gallery exhibition project documenting the gallery's wartime art storage in a Snowdonian mine 2018. Friend's work has been exhibited at Aperture Gallery New York; Christies Paris and at the National Gallery National Portrait Gallery Somerset House & the Royal Academy of Arts in London. The stories are A Country Where You Once Lived Black; Lion and Panther in London James; The Strange Career of Dr. Raju Gopalarajan Parameswaran; Cretan Love Song Shepard; and Standard Loneliness Package Yu. Jim Shepard born 1956 is an American novelist and short story writer who teaches creative writing and film at Williams College. Shepard's work has been published in McSweeney's Granta The Atlantic Monthly Esquire Harper's The New Yorker The Paris Review Ploughshares Triquarterly and Playboy. His short story collection — Like You'd Understand Anyway — won the Story Prize in 2007 and was nominated for a National Book Award in 2007. The novel Project X won the 2005 Massachusetts Book Award. Along with writing novels and short stories Shepard has also drafted two screenplays one about Kenneth Donaldson and the O'Connor v. Donaldson case and the other a movie adaptation of Project X. Shepard is the winner of the Rea Award for the Short Story 2016. Charles Chowkai Yu born January 3 1976 is an American writer. He is the author of the novels How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe and Interior Chinatown and the short-story collections Third Class Superhero and Sorry Please Thank You. In 2007 he was named a "5 under 35" honoree by the National Book Foundation. Interior Chinatown won the National Book Award for fiction 2020. Robin Black's story collection If I loved you I would tell you this was a finalist for the Frank O'Connor International Story Prize and named a Best Book of 2010 by numerous publications including the Irish Times. Her novel Life Drawing was longlisted for the Flaherty-Dunnan First Novel Prize the Impac Dublin Literature Prize and the Folio Prize. Her fiction has been translated into Italian French German and Dutch. Robin's most recent book is Crash Course: Essays From Where Writing And Life Collide. Robin's work can be found in such publications as One Story The New York Times Book Review The Chicago Tribune Southern Review The Rumpus O. A scarce signed copy of the first printing here inscribed to no recipient on the half-title page: "In honor of our oldest teachers the plants Robin Wall Kimmerer." As detailed in articles about the sensation that this book has become Braiding Sweetgrass had a first printing of only 8000 copies most of which were probably bought by libraries; no major newspaper reviewed it. In 2020 five years after the paperback was first released Braiding Sweetgrass made the New York Times bestseller list for paperback nonfiction and it hasn’t left—this week Feb 22 2026 is its 303rd week on the list currently #12. As of 2024 it had sold more than 2 million copies. A word-of-mouth phenomenon. We've been watching for about five years and this is the first signed hardcover copy we've found. So far as we can tell there aren't even any other hardcover copies on the market. Priced accordingly. Very good with faint foxing to the outer edge of the text block and perhaps a dozen dogeared pages. In a very good minus jacket with light foxing to some margins.
