1935178999Melbourne.: Robertson & Mullens. 1935. 56pp appendix printed paper covered boards with linen spine. One paragraph with underlining and a prior owner name on the title page otherwise a near fine copy. "Edmund Leolin Piesse 1880-1947 foreign policy analyst and lawyer was born on 26 July 1880 at New Town Hobart. In 1909 he joined the newly established Australian Intelligence Corps and as staff officer undertook the first military survey of Tasmania. Following the outbreak of World War I the Defence Department transferred him to the Intelligence section of the Directorate of Military Operations in Melbourne and in March 1916 he was appointed as a major director of military intelligence.

His duties included drafting and enforcing War Precautions Act regulations postal and press censorship counter-espionage surveillance of enemy aliens and even sometimes of allied aliens notably the Japanese. The problem of Japan's intentions with which he had long been troubled and Australia's Pacific policy became almost an obsession. Japan had expanded into China Siberia and the former German North Pacific islands. In October 1918 Piesse warned the minister for defence Sir George Pearce that the Japanese seemed bent on an imperial course and that they might drive southward towards Australia.

In the early 1930s however the re-emergence of Japanese imperialism and the rise of fascism in Europe persuaded Piesse of renewed danger for Australia. With the encouragement of the secretary of the External Affairs Department W. R. Hodgson and the chief of the General Staff Colonel John Lavarack he published his pamphlet Japan and the Defence of Australia 1935 directed at 'Professors who believe in collective security in the Pacific' and at 'Admirals who believe in Imperial Defence for Australia'. He was impatient with the Lyons government's blind faith in British assurances of naval protection and campaigned in the press and on the radio to secure a greater share of the defence budget for the army and air force. By 1937 Piesse's arguments had to a large extent carried the day in the local Round Table group and his article on 'The Defence of Australia' was published in the Round Table London. This was the only occasion that he attempted publicly to change government policy." Australian Dictionary of Biography. Volume 11 1988.

A presentation copy from the author E. L. 19868383San Francisco: The Albatross Book Co. Fine. 1986. Printed by Bruce Washbish at his Anchor & Acorn Press. 17" x 11"; printed letterpress in black & blue on light blue stock with a reproduction of the 'Rabbit' pressmark from the original drawn circa 1957 by Robert Duncan. Verso with return address of Albatross Books and the poster is lightly scored across the middle to allow folding. This poster never folded. The program also unfolded is 13" x 9" and printed on both sides to form the four pages the front with a facsimile of the cover from the first book of the White Rabbit Press designed and drawn by Jess. The participation of Albatross Book Company actual DBA in this symposium and exhibit was proposed and lead by our colleague at the shop Doug Lowell who was at the time in the Master's in Poetics program at New College of California in San Francisco. Faculty in that program included as I recollect Robert Duncan Diane Di Prima Joannne Kyger Duncan McNaughton Anselm Hollo among others. The rest of us at Albatross supported Doug's tireless efforts scouting material to round out the exhibit and helping with preparations. I believe Doug put the poster and program together working with Bruce Washbish Duncan and Jess at least. As one can see in the list of acknowledgments in the program there was quite a community of contributors to the symposium and the result was a real poetics shebang on White Rabbit at several venues. A high spot for the old store. . The Albatross Book Co. unknown
