1916003715New York: The University of the State of New York State Museum 1916. Reading copy with much wear and tear. Full page color plates by L.A. Fuertes. Marginalia lovers dream. It appears that the owner of this book used it to document in almost diary form throughout book what appears to be more than 20 years of bird watching from 1931 to 1953 with dated notes throughout: on blank pages reverso of plates etc even laid in sheets. Book has numerous flaws with serious wear and tear to cloth covers. Cloth is peeling from front boards and there is a split the length of front spine. Shaken. Multiple sheets laid in front of book were cello taped and are now loose and the cello tape has left a dark stain. There is evidence on about six pages in front of insect or rodent nibbling on bottom corner these are actually laid in lone pages not pages from the actual book. The color plates are bright but some have fingermarks or light foxed spots at least one page has ink transfer from the previous page. There are some plates with notes or marginalia on reverse. Cloth. Reading Copy/No Jacket. Illus. by Fuertes L.A. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. The University of the State of New York State Museum Hardcover

176620596Florence Italy: Giuseppe Vanni 1766. Print. Very good condition. Contemporary hand colored copper engraving. From the Natural History of the Birds Treated Systematically and Adorned with Copperplate Engraving Illustrations in Miniature and Life-Size 1766-1777.

The work carries some interesting historical importance according to Peter Dance: "The production of its five massive folio volumes must have been one of the most remarkable publishing ventures ever undertaken in Florence. Begun in 1767 and based on birds taken from the collection of Giovanni Gerini it was completed ten years later. It was larger better engraved and more vividly coloured than any previous work on birds but these are not its only claim to fame. The attitudes of the birds themselves give this book its unique character. Strutting parading posturing and occasionally flying.are birds whose real-life counterparts would surely disown them and not without reason for Manetti seems in these pictures to be depicting the human comedy the habits and mannerisms of contemporary Italian society. His book may still be rated among the very greatest bird books if only for its magnificent comicality" S. Peter Dance The Art of Natural History: Animal Illustrators and their Work. London 1978.

Approx. 10 5/8 x 13 1/2" platemark on watermarked paper measuring 14 1/2 x 18". The original images were drawn by Lorenzo Lorenzi Violante Vanni or Manetti himself. 182223414London 1822. Very good overall. A handsome hand colored copper engraving of an Australian falcon perched on a branch from Latham's 'General Synopsis of Birds'.

Dr. John Latham 1740 - 1847 the leading British ornithologist of his time was a founding member of the Linnean Society and through his work with the society became acquainted with the leading naturalists and collectors of the day. Many specimens and drawings of Australian birds were arriving in Britain following expeditions to Australia. Latham gave the first published descriptions and scientific names of Australian birds including the emu lyre bird magpie and white cockatoo.

A good strong impression on paper with wide margins. Faint smudging in the top margin only not affecting the image. 'Plate XI' upper left corner. Paper 8 1/4 x 10 1/2" unknown
