Vol.3 Autumn has 38 prints of which 4 are double page. Vol.4 Winter has 34 plates of which 4 are double page and one is a four page spread. These original Tanaka Jihei issues which preceded the Unsodo versions have become quite scarce complete sets even more so and sets with the western number captioning the true first printing almost impossible to find. The original covers are worn and the 4 volumes have been placed into heavy cloth outer bindings with supplied title labels. The printings are excellent the colors much milder than the reprints subtle and lovely. Complete as issued by Tanaka Jihei very unusual. unknown

A handsome hand colored copper engraving of an Australian falcon perched on a branch from Latham's 'General Synopsis of Birds'. <br /> <br /> Dr. John Latham 1740 - 1847 the leading British ornithologist of his time was a founding member of the Linnean Society and through his work with the society became acquainted with the leading naturalists and collectors of the day. Many specimens and drawings of Australian birds were arriving in Britain following expeditions to Australia. Latham gave the first published descriptions and scientific names of Australian birds including the emu lyre bird magpie and white cockatoo. <br /> <br /> A good strong impression on paper with wide margins. Faint smudging in the top margin only not affecting the image. 'Plate XI' upper left corner. Paper 8 1/4 x 10 1/2" unknown

No. 4 Pl. 7 and "Drawn from Nature by J. J. Audubon F.R.S.F.L.S." at the lower left. Audubon based these octavo prints on the folio drawings of 'Birds of America' but made some modifications due to the smaller format. With the male and female birds perched on tree branch. Illustrated with 25 Full Sized Lithographic plates depicting 323 eggs of the birds coloured true to nature generally with 15 eggs per folio plate sometimes with less when depicting the eggs of the largest birds. Folio 37.5 x 26.5 cm an original unbound set of the folio leaves all laid into a holding box of black cloth the spine lettered in gilt. 116 textual plates and 25 lithographic plates on toned paper. A fine copy of this rare work. FIRST EDITION AND ONE OF A VERY FEW COPIES ISSUED UNBOUND UNCUT AND UNTRIMMED.
