Le britannique Walter Swaysland a conçu cet ouvrage comme un guide des différentes espèces d'oiseaux que l'on peut rencontrer en Grande-Bretagne. Chaque oiseau fait l'objet d'une notice descriptive et pédagogique, illustrée d'une chromolithographie en couleurs. Les illustrations sont l'oeuvre du peintre écossais Archibald Thorburn (1860-1935) et de l'artiste Eliza Turck (1832-1910), reconnus notamment pour leurs représentations d'oiseaux. A noter que chaque volume se termine par les oeufs correspondants aux différentes espèces. Reliures en bon état avec petites usures d'usage, rousseurs parfois, surtout pour les serpentes de la première série, chromolithographies en très bon état. Bon ensemble, avec un charmant cartonnage.
