1963023173Aachen: Hans Limberg 1963. Second edition a complete set published between 1963 and 1977. In the original 40 paperback parts. Originally owned by the ornithologist and author Colin Harrison with his signature on many of the parts. With 19 colour plates and many small text illustrations octavo 1047 pages a very good set with two red binding cases which are just slightly worn. The second volume seems to be quite scarce. The work deals with cage and aviary birds paying particular attention to finches and contains much useful background detail regarding their wild habits and habitats. A heavy set - extra postage may be necesary. Originally owned by the British ornithologist and author Colin Harrison. He became a professional ornithologist at the age of 34 and became responsible for the care of the national collection of birds' nests and eggs in the Bird Room at the Natural History Museum at Tring Hertfordshire. In 1966 he led the fourth of the series of Harold Hall Australian ornithological collecting expeditions. Harrison later became interested in biogeography and the museum's avian paleontological collection on which he published a number of articles with Cyril Walker. He studied and published on different aspects of bird behaviour on plumage patterns and on the bone structure of modern and fossil birds. He identified Eostrix vincenti in 1980. His more popular publications include "Atlas of the Birds of the Western Palearctic" Collins 1982; "History of the Birds of Britain Collins 1988 and "A Field Guide to the Nests Eggs and Nestlings of British and European Birds Quadrangle 1975. He was born in the Netherlands in 1744 to Robert Stedman, a Scot and an officer in Holland's Scots Brigade, and his wife of Dutch noble lineage, Antoinetta Christina van Ceulen. He lived most of his childhood in Holland with his parents but spent time with his uncle in Scotland. His years in Surinam, on the northern coast of South America, were characterized by encounters with African slaves and colonial planters, as well as the exotic local flora and fauna. He recorded his experiences in this Narrative of a Five Years Expedition against the Revolted Negroes of Surinam (1796) which, with its firsthand depictions of slavery and other aspects of colonization, became an important tool in the early abolitionist cause. **PRICE JUST REDUCED!
