Chapman no relative but the explorer and author also signed in pencil to the half title to the reverse of the front free endpaper no foxing no inscriptions. A very good copy. BIOG. Frederick Spencer Chapman DSO & Bar ED 1907 - 1971 was a British Army officer and World War II veteran most famous for his exploits behind enemy lines in Japanese occupied Malaya. His medals include the following: the Distinguished Service Order and Bar the Polar Medal Gill Memorial Medal Mungo Park Medal and the Lawrence of Arabia Memorial Medal. He joined many expeditions. Chapman was attached as "ski expert and naturalist" to Gino Watkins' 1930 -31 British Arctic Air Route Expedition. Expedition members included John Rymill and Augustine Courtauld. He also joined Watkins' subsequent fatal Greenland Expedition of 1932-33 which was led by Rymill after Watkins' death. Part of Lovell Reeve's Popular Natural History series where a number of authors were chosen to introduce their subjects to young people in a way that would give a good foundation while inspiring them to study further. This copy is in the original binding which is very bright and clean. The gilt decoration on the front board is slightly dulled. Spine ends have light pulling and there is light wear to corners. Contents complete with hand coloured frontispiece and 19 further plates. 1 page ad for the Literary Gazette at the rear. There is an ink inscription at the front free endpaper. 1853033269<p>London : Reeve and Co 1853 A good copy of the 2nd edition in the original decorative cloth binding with 20 hand coloured plates. Popular British Ornithology was part of Reeve's Popular Natural History series which was produced to give young students a proper grounding in natural history subjects. The binding is sound and clean. The spine is faded with light pulling to the ends. Boards have some mottling to the cloth but the gilt decoration on the front board is bright. There are a couple of small dents in the side edge of the back board and 2 slightly darker scuffs on the front board. There is some splitting at the front endpaper joint but the book is sound. Contents are in very good clean condition with light toning and occasional spotting to page edges. The plate list is slightly confusing because the frontispiece is not numbered and plate 14 is placed earlier than it should be.</p> Reeve and Co hardcover

The binding is sound and bright with gilt titles to spine and textured cloth boards. There is some pulling to spine ends and light wear to corners. The back board has 4 tiny spot marks and a slightly paler area at the top close to the spine. The contents are complete with 26 coloured plates as per the plate listing which places plate 26 before plates 24 and 25. The text paper and endpapers are lightly toned and there is some spotting to the foredge which is occasionally visible internally at the page edge - including plate pages. The plates are tissue-guarded - the guard to plate 9 has small loss from a side edge. There is small stain at the bottom gutter edge which is visible at the rear endpapers and on plates 1 24 and 25. This does not affect the images. A sliver of text surface from p 96 has attached itself to the back of plate 14 - this affects some words but it is possible to work out what they are from what remains.
