Each issue contains 8 or 9 gorgeous full color plates; also retained here are the full color covers of Vol. I Nos. 1 and 2 unknown whether succeeding issues continued with color covers thus approx. 150 plates total all essentially as issued some with small library stamp on verso only. Text block is clean and otherwise unmarked. This title appears to have ceased publication at the conclusion of Vol. IV so this offering comprises 75% of the total run. A handsome hand colored copper engraving of an Australian falcon perched on a branch from Latham's 'General Synopsis of Birds'. <br /> <br /> Dr. John Latham 1740 - 1847 the leading British ornithologist of his time was a founding member of the Linnean Society and through his work with the society became acquainted with the leading naturalists and collectors of the day. Many specimens and drawings of Australian birds were arriving in Britain following expeditions to Australia. Latham gave the first published descriptions and scientific names of Australian birds including the emu lyre bird magpie and white cockatoo. <br /> <br /> A good strong impression on paper with wide margins. The binding is clean and sound with light fading to the spine and the board edges. The spine ends have some chipping and there is a small cloth split developing at the top end of the front spine joint. The corners are turned inwards. The original green endpapers are present and are bright and unmarked. Contents: volume listing; half title; black and white frontispiece portrait of Haller; hand coloured vignette title page with picture of Green Tody; 2 further title pages; advert; contents listing; Memoir of Baron Haller; text; and 31 hand coloured plates bound at the rear. This is an unusual copy in that all of the text remains unopened - in the state in which it came from the publishers. The text paper looks quite brown toned. FIRST VOLUME. comprises Vol II number 13 July 1983 to number 24 June 1884; bound with Volume III number 24 July 1894 to Number 30 December 1894. Possibly lacking part 26 but the months are consecutive so almost certainly a printing error. SECOND VOLUME Vol IV number 31 January 1895 to Volume IV number 53 November 1896. Added at the rear is Swanton's paper on British Puff-Balls 6pp and Mosley's 'Catalogue of British Birds Nests and Eggs' 46pp. Signature again of Albert John Barnes contemporary cloth but hinges completely broken so the text block is sound but detached. THIRD VOLUME Volume VII number 67 January 1898 to number 80 February 1899 plus extra 57 pp of articles including Swanton's Monograph of British Boleti 13pp. Includes 6 colour plates of moths one of fungi and two of beetles. FOURTH VOLUME Volume X number 103 January 1901 to number 114 December 1901 text block completely detached from the contemporary cloth. Includes 5 colour plates two botanical two of lichens and one of moths. Some of the plates are certainly hand-coloured though fairly simple whilst others may be colour printed. The tissue guards to plates 6 and 26 are present but detached. Plate 17 has very toned paper particularly at the edges and there is professional paper repair to the side edge. The paint has splashed however in a couple of places eg at plate 16 where there is a small blue splot at the bottom of the plate and a blue splash at the back of the previous plate affecting the plate edge. The cloth binding has been rebacked relaying the original spine and is sound and tight. There is some slightly paler marking to the boards and the corners have light wear. The original green endpapers are present - the free endpaper is watermarked - and have professional repair at the joints. Contents are clean with toning to the margins including to the plate paper. Pages 169-172 have been roughly opened at the top edge and there is a small ink spot at the top edge of p 205. The plates are generally clean and very well coloured. Tissue guards tend to have some spotting or offsetting - Plate 1 has general toning and a very browned guard and the guard to plate 24 has a small area of paint from the bird on it.</p> W H LIZARS hardcover
