8vo., First Edition, with 32 coloured plates and numerous maps; cloth, a near fine copy in the dustwrapper. Already scarce in this condition
8vo., Fourth Edition thus, with 23 coloured plates of drawings by the author and numerous illustrations and maps in the text; blue cloth, gilt back, a near fine copy in unclipped dustwrapper, the latter [only] lightly damp-marked. This seminal work, a true classic of modern ornithology, first appeared with black-and-white illustrations in the Second Annual Report of the [then] Severn Wildfowl Trust, 1948-49. It was reissued as a separate book in 1950 with a revised edition in 1951. This coloured version first appeared in 1957 and amounts to an entirely new publication. Substantial revisions have been made to the text and there has been further extensive revision in the light of the most recent taxonomic opinion. Yet further revision in included in the 1968 edition as here. The damp-marking is undeniable but far from offensive. The clothbound copy is very scarce, especially in the dustwrapper.

He was born in the Netherlands in 1744 to Robert Stedman, a Scot and an officer in Holland's Scots Brigade, and his wife of Dutch noble lineage, Antoinetta Christina van Ceulen. He lived most of his childhood in Holland with his parents but spent time with his uncle in Scotland. His years in Surinam, on the northern coast of South America, were characterized by encounters with African slaves and colonial planters, as well as the exotic local flora and fauna. He recorded his experiences in this Narrative of a Five Years Expedition against the Revolted Negroes of Surinam (1796) which, with its firsthand depictions of slavery and other aspects of colonization, became an important tool in the early abolitionist cause. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! The scarce First Edition of an early volume in this classic series published by the Smithsonian Institution. "Everyone interested in birds should discover the magnificent work of Arthur Cleveland Bent (1866-1954), one of America's greatest ornithologists. His extraordinary Life Histories of North American Birds, published in a twenty-one volume series (1919-1968), provided behavioral information not available in the standard field guides. These pioneering studies are the durable foundation on which almost all other compilations of North American bird biology (including the contemporary Birds of North America) rest. In them Bent and his collaborators present, in enthusiastic, readable prose, comprehensive information about courtship, nesting, eggs, young, plumages, food, behavior, voice, enemies, and more. Readers who supplement their field guides with these delightful accounts acquire a deeper understanding of both the birds and their observers (as well as an interesting cultural history lesson)." NH9
