A handsome hand colored copper engraving of an Australian falcon perched on a branch from Latham's 'General Synopsis of Birds'. <br /> <br /> Dr. John Latham 1740 - 1847 the leading British ornithologist of his time was a founding member of the Linnean Society and through his work with the society became acquainted with the leading naturalists and collectors of the day. Many specimens and drawings of Australian birds were arriving in Britain following expeditions to Australia. Latham gave the first published descriptions and scientific names of Australian birds including the emu lyre bird magpie and white cockatoo. <br /> <br /> A good strong impression on paper with wide margins. Faint smudging in the top margin only not affecting the image. 'Plate XI' upper left corner. Paper 8 1/4 x 10 1/2" unknown

Otherwise cover in good condition with little shelf wear. 36 glossy pages with 1 color plate and 12 black and white full-page plates of early work of Wallace Hughes "a promising young artists. Wallace Hughes is now in his early twenties". 13 B&W photographs of birds at OWEN PARK in Tulsa Oklahoma included in an article "by the editor of Parks & Recreation" Will O. Dolittle after the Wallace Hughes text and plates. The twelve plates illustrate the park birds in Owen Park in each of the twelve months of the year. Book has had newspaper clippings stored within the pages as late as 1963 causing some discoloration to some of the pages. Clippings included in the sale. Application for membership in the Tulsa Audubon Society also inserted at the back of the book. Rare and precious find. Our personal family collection.
