This seminal work, a true classic of modern ornithology, first appeared with black-and-white illustrations in the Second Annual Report of the [then] Severn Wildfowl Trust, 1948-49. It was reissued as a separate book in 1950 with a revised edition in 1951. This coloured version first appeared in 1957 and amounts to an entirely new publication. Substantial revisions have been made to the text and there has been further extensive revision in the light of the most recent taxonomic opinion. Yet further revision in included in the 1968 edition as here. The damp-marking is undeniable but far from offensive. The clothbound copy is very scarce, especially in the dustwrapper.
