An excellent copy. The Oates-Selborne copy with the bookplate of Robert Washington Oates; the library was later gifted to the Gilbert White Museum in 1955. Rev. James Grahame 1765 - 1811 was a Scottish poet whose poems are full of quiet observation of country sights expressed in graceful verse. Illustrated with 15 tinted lithographs all of which are rather age-toned and a bit foxed large thick octavo ppm xii 520 a little used throughout a few corners slightly turned the hinge at the title page is cracked but only slightly weak original green beveled cloth with a gilt decoration on the front cover rather rubbed and slightly marked the spine is frayed and worn at top and bottom and lacking a narrow strip at the top. Tipped-in at the front is a five-page offprint biograohy of Robert Gray. This has the stamp and signature of the Scottish geologist and palaeontologist John Hunter so it seems possible that the book was his also. First Edition. Cloth. Fair. Thomas Murray & Son Hardcover

Popular British Ornithology was part of Reeve's Popular Natural History series which was produced to give young students a proper grounding in natural history subjects. The binding is sound and clean. The spine is faded with light pulling to the ends. Boards have some mottling to the cloth but the gilt decoration on the front board is bright. There are a couple of small dents in the side edge of the back board and 2 slightly darker scuffs on the front board. There is some splitting at the front endpaper joint but the book is sound. Contents are in very good clean condition with light toning and occasional spotting to page edges. The plate list is slightly confusing because the frontispiece is not numbered and plate 14 is placed earlier than it should be.</p> Reeve and Co hardcover

The books looks "very good" but some splitting at the top of the spine and the inner hinges are cracking although the book is tight. Lacks plates 22 & 23 but with an extra plates #28 & 29. I understand this is common problem with this book if we can use the term for such an uncommon book as these were evidently assembled by hand and mistakes were made.
