Accompanying is a letter from the manager of the trade department of MacMillan to a bookshop in Dallas Texas. The top of the letter the fep & the inside front cover are rust stained from an old staple since removed. The book contains 16 plates on 8 pages with the balance blank paper. The dummy was intended to help obtain advance orders of the book. The letter is dated 10 Aug '37 3 months before publication date. There is very slight soiling to the top of the front cover and a 1 1/2x3" area of silverfish damage to the top outer corner of the back cover. Otherwise the book is extremely tight. He was pioneering and developed new techniques especially the use of flash photography and automatic shutter release technology which enabled him to photograph birds at night and freeze birds in flight for the first time. Famously when just 28 he lost an eye to a tawny owl while climbing up to a hide in rural Wales the event which inspired the ingeneous title of his autobiography "An Eye for a Bird" 1970. Over his exceptionally long career he photographed over 1800 species and his pictures have appeared in some 1000 books including the popular New Naturalist series of which he was photographic editor.
