The bird illustrators deserve special note. Robert Ridgway (1850-1929) was one America's leading ornithologists. At the age of 17, he was appointed zoologist on a geological survey of the 40th parallel. From 1874 until his death, he served as ornithologist and curator of the Smithsonian Institute. Ridgway established a system of color standards and nomenclature that is still used today. Robert's younger brother John was chief illustrator for United States Geological Survey and an artist for the California Institute of Technology and Carnegie Institution of Washington. The 1st Preliminary Event exhibition was held a few years earlier. Both events were in preparation for the 'World Architecture Exposition, Nara 1998'. This volume presents the work of 21 architects from Japan and many other countries including: Taro Asihara, Andrew Birds, Norihiko Dan, Dunning & Versteegh, Terese Erngaard, Kimmo Friman, Hudeo Horiike, Atsushi Kitagawara, Kengo Kuma, Kent Martinussen, Nuno Mateus, Shuji C. Miura, Hiroshi Naito, Tadashi Ohe, Reiser + Umemoto, Dagmar Richter, Kazuyo Sejima, Takayuki Suzuki, Joseph Wong, Hajime Yatsuka and Ken Yokogawa. Each architect is profiled and their work is shown with drawings, models and photographs. The advisory board for this volume and exhibition included: Paul Goldberger, Kenneth Frampton, Jorge Glusberg, Charles Jencks, and Dennis Sharp among others.
