19485597<p>The book includes stories by David Ross Locke pseudonym Petroleum V. Nasby 1833-1888 Kenneth Roberts 1885-1957 and Irving S. Cobb 1876-1944.<br /><strong>Peter Karachentsov</strong> 1907-1998 was a prominent Soviet graphic artist poster artist and illustrator. He studied at VKhUTEIN under Dmitri Moor and Lev Bruni.<br />This series of books from the magazine '<em>Sovetskii voin</em>' comprises Russian translations of stories by American authors published by <em>Voenizdat </em>the Russian Military Publishing House during the Cold War. These collections include stories not only by leftist or communist writers but also by politically neutral authors. In this case each story was accompanied by a special preface aimed at providing the correct interpretation of the texts. A publisher's sample copy with 1 alternate spine covers with different prices glued inside front and back covers 2 handwritten description glued to front free endpage 3 advertising notices and clippings bound in back of book and 4 agent's ledger of sales bound in back of book. Binding is quite shaken but holding. Pages are unmarked but somewhat tanned and with occasional soiling and/or foxing. Tissue page over frontispiece is creased and foxed. Inside back cover is spotty as though a third spine sample has been removed. Green cloth cover is quite worn at edges with boards showing at corners. Spine is dark and spine tips are torn and no title is visible. "Nasby" is embossed on front cover but any gilt or coloration has been rubbed off. . I. N. Richardson and Company hardcover
1880575<p>Condition: Good. This is a rare hard-rebound first edition third printing. Much in this volume first appeared in newspapers and magazines and then as a collection first published in 1864 under the title <em>The Nasby Papers Letters and Sermons</em>. In amplified form they appeared again in 1865 under the title <em>Nasby. Divers Views Opinions and Prophecies</em>. <em>The Struggles</em> edition also known as "The Nasby Letters" for short was first published in 1872 and went through five printings until 1893. This 1880 copy the third printing is missing its end papers fly pages and title/copyright page. Based on a complete copy at Harvard University seen digitally through HathiTrust the table of contents and page count shows the copy at hand is the 1880 printing of 627 pages. It is shorter than other printings which include three lectures given in Boston during the Civil War. Page counts for the other printings are 720 670 and 715. For reference copies of the title and copyright pages held by Harvard are inserted with the rebound pages. PRICES: Reprints from various printings are available for from $32 to $42. Two original 1872 first editions were found both in fair condition for $137 and $95. This copy for sale in Good condition in its rebound preserved state has a strong binding for all its pages. The paper is supple with no chipping and the Nast engravings are clear and crisp. Some pages have soiling and some have foxing and two pages have plant leaf impressions where leaves were placed to press them. This is a well-preserved 1880 edition made collectible by its near completeness and preserved condition.</p> Lock Publishing Co. hardcover
