18702240150Philadelphia PA: Porter & Coates 1870. Hardcover. Good-. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. F. O. C. Darley. See photos for condition details. Hardcover orange cloth boards show quite a bit of scuffing and soiling along with edge and corner bumps/wear spine is darkened and sunned. The internal binding of the text portion of the book is good but the hinges show thin cracking at both boards. The book also contains 19th-century library markings: the front pastedown contains a label stating it was presented to the St. Francis Xavier Library of Gettysburg by Anna Dill Gamble and her signature also appears on the title page. The first end page also has handwriting present one being an 1870 Christmas gift inscription with something erased above it and the rear pastedown as a label pasted in stating "this book must be returned". The title page also has a faint embossed round seal presumably naming the library. The exterior is the main reason for the low condition grade but the interior binding makes this a suitable reading copy as the pages are still securely attached with no tears. There is foxing and spotting present but mainly the pages are just toned due to age with the exception of the two frontis illustrations which are quite foxed due to reacting to the tissue guard. Anna Dill Gamble was internationally recognized as an advocate for world peace and active in the women's suffrage movement. After her death she was nominated as one of the most influential women leaders in York County's history.

Porter & Coates hardcover
