br. Un problema filosofico innerva di sé gran parte della produzione degli U2: il problema del conflitto tra eros e agape, le due facce dell'amore. Si può rinvenire, album dopo album, un percorso abbastanza chiaro che un lui (la cui concezione dell'amore è incentrata su agape) e una lei (discepola di eros) compiono riguardo all'amore: un percorso tragico, poiché tragica è la necessità di scegliere tra due opzioni apparentemente inconciliabili, che vengono entrambe riconosciute come dotate di valore e che reclamano con forza la loro autorità sugli individui. La lotta principale dell'io cantante degli U2 consiste allora nel tentativo, sempre rinnovato, di tenere insieme quelle due parti del sé e di poter celebrare l'amore - eros e agape insieme - come fondamento e senso della vita. Forse si può stare stanotte in una bugia, sapendo che è tale, e che è necessaria per sentirsi a casa, senza però essere spinti troppo lontano tramite la pretesa che la bugia sia invece la verità, il centro intorno al quale far ruotare tutto.
