19044178Paris: Les Cent Bibliophiles 1904. 4to cream wrappers with embossed design covering both covers in pink green and gilt. Professionally rebacked in compatible paper. Included is the contemporary marbled board portfolio into which the book had been bound presumably for the original owner Maurice Quarré a member of the French bibliophile with his bookplate laid in. With announcement from L'Estampe Originale listing this work as appearing next. Scattered minor foxing; a very pretty copy. Seventeen embossed designs in color "estampes modelées" by Pierre Roche. These are sculptural relief engravings apparently from plaster models according to Gordon Ray printed with touches of color in a process called gypsography. Roche a pupil of Rodin was a noted sculptor medallist and ceramist. This is the first use of relief illustrations in a book and the first use of Auriol Italique type which combine for a beautiful mise-en-page. This exquisite Art Nouveau book captures the celebrated American artiste whirling in here diaphanous veils lit by colored spotlights. Loïe opened her own special theater at the 1900 Paris World's Fair and called her performance "la danse serpentine." A vibrant homage to the dancer who fascinated the world and a bibliographic and technical tour de force. Ray The Art of the French Illustrated book p. 480. Part I 2 176 pp; Part II 2 174 pp. Contemporary full mottled calf with the spine in six gilt-decorated compartments; hinges partially cracked but firm; rubbing at the edges and chipping at the corners. Moderate foxing or soiling. A near very good copy. "In 1760 the French writer Charles François Tiphaigne de la Roche wrote a novel that today would be considered science fiction. Titled Giphantie an anagram of his name it describes his imaginary travels. He was lifted into the air and transported half unconscious to a beautiful garden in a strange land. There he met a Spirit who said 'I am the Prefect of this island which is called Giphantie.' With the Prefect as guide Tiphaigne explored the wonders of 'the island.'" In GIPHANTIA Chapter XVII Part I The author prophecies the fixing of transient images of nature by the action of light. "Thou knowest that the rays of light reflected from different bodies make a picture and paint the bodies upon all polished surfaces on the retina of the eye for instance on water on glass. The elementary spirits have studied to fix these transient images: they have composed a most subtle matter very viscous and proper to harden and dry by the help of which a picture is made in the twinkle of an eye. They do over this matter a piece of canvas and hold it before the objects they have in mind to paint. The first effect of the canvas is that of a mirror; there are seen upon it all the bodies far and near whose image the light can transmit. But what the glass cannot do the canvas by means of the viscous matter retains the images. The mirror shows the objects exactly; but keeps none; our canvases show them with the same exactness and retains them all. This impression of the images is made the first instant they are received on the canvas which is immediately carried away into some dark place; an hour after the subtle matter dries and you have a picture so much the more valuable as it cannot be imitated by art nor damaged by time." 004228Paris. Faux Lacquer. Very Good Minus. Handsome folder promoting opium as a pharmaceutical! N.d. circa 1900 to 1910. 30 by 23 cm. Tabularly-presented text is on the endpapers with four leaves of heavy blank yellow paper bound in by string. On the two page table of particular interest in our view is the drug called "Pantopon 'Roche'" whose composition is "Opium Total". Other drugs we note contain "barbiturate." The opium-connection might explain the Chinoiserie decoration of the binder. Of course the boards are also very decorative making this binder a prized promotional giveaway which we assume it would have been to the company's customers and other contacts. The Basel-based Hoffmann La Roche was founded in 1896 and soon had offices in Paris. It remains to this day a pharmaceutical giant. Minor surface loss to the black faux lacquer surface along the edges. Ink and pencil marks abounding on the yellow blanks suggesting these were used as blotter paper. Minor loss and looseness to the endpaper at the spine.

unknown books
18881549Casa Blanca 1888. Very good. Manuscript map 18 x 23.5 inches. Drawn in black red and blue. Previously folded. Minor soiling and wear. An attractive manuscript map depicting the topography surrounding the small Sinaloan town of Santa Anita southeast of Culiacán near El Comedero. The map is somewhat oddly oriented with due north pointing toward the lower right corner of the sheet. It shows Santa Anita at its center with mountains to its east and dry plains to the west heading toward the Pacific Ocean. Two trails labeled "Camino Nacional de Culiacan" and "Camino del Veinticuatro" connect Santa Anita to the even smaller towns of Llano and Veinticuatro at the map borders. A small section of the Rio San Lorenzo is detailed at the eastern edge of the map area for context. The map was surveyed and drawn by Ignacio L. Rocha a graduate in 1883 of the reformed Colegio Rosales first founded in 1874. Three other maps by Rocha are located in the Mexican Agricultural Archives. A neat and appealing example. unknown books

Inscribed: “To Mom Thanks for all your support! I love you Phyllis 4/24/87â€. Illustrated. Near fine copy with some minor handling in a very good dust jacket with some small chips and tears. Gates tells the story of her marriage to actor Rock Hudson whom she met in 1954 and married in November 1955 shortly after Hudson finished filming Giant. They separated a few years later in 1957 with their divorce being finalized in 1958. Rumors of Hudson’s publicly hidden homosexuality as well as the reports of Gates being a closeted lesbian circulated in the media primarily in journalist Robert Hoffer’s biography ‘The Man Who Invented Rock Hudson’ and in the gay and lesbian news magazine The Advocate. Gates 1925 - 2006 steadfastly and publicly maintained that her love of Hudson was real and denied that she was a lesbian. Rock Hudson 1925 - 1985 was the first major public figure to announce that he had AIDS. He is best remembered for his films Giant 1956 Pillow Talk 1959 Come September 1961 and on television including starring in McMillan & Wife with Susan Saint James and on Dynasty as the character Daniel Reece. 197122826Hull: Hull University 1971. First Edition. Very good. Poster silk-screened in blue gold and red. Mild wear creasing. Some rubbing. Else bright and sound. Very good.

Original poster for an Afro Rock event at Hull University featuring one of the most important bands of the movement Assagai. Afro Rock which had its strongest incarnation in the UK in the late sixties and early seventies combined Western rock instrumentation with African and Afro-Cuban rhythms and percussion. Assagai featured emegrees from both South Africa and Nigeria as well a Ghana; the lineup included drummer Louis Moholo trumpeter/flautist Mongezi Feza alto saxophonist Dudu Pukwana tenor saxophonist Bizo Mngqikana guitarist/bassist Fred Coker their chief songwriter and Terri Quaye — the first professional female congaist in the UK. Assagai issued just two highly-reguarded albums both in 1971 on Vertigo Records one of the few if not the only all-black band signed to that legendary rock label and this poster dates from that peak. While they broke up shortly after this gig the members went on to long careers in various other jazz and prog groups. A striking poster from this significant but poorly documented group.
