1884173626Shanghai: Printed at the "Celestial Empire" office 1884. China is like a large pie. For many years covetous nations have been nibbling at the edge of the crust First edition of this eyewitness account of clashes between French and Chinese naval forces following the collapse of the Li-Fournier Agreement. Two tables show detail each side's ships and their specifications as well as the damage they sustained. The Tonkin War developed out of a tussle between France and China for influence in Vietnam. Following a number of engagements diplomatic exchanges between Li Hongzhang and Captain Ernest François Fournier produced a tentative agreement that China would withdraw from Tonkin and legally recognize a French protectorate. Negotiations however eventually broke down and the French launched an attack on Fuzhou on 23 August 1884. Foreign military observers including the two American authors of this report saw the engagement as a chance to evaluate the success of recent Chinese attempts to modernize the imperial navy. For the Qing empire the Battle of Fuzhou was a disaster the French fleet eight ships outgunning its eleven vessels all of which were eventually sunk. The defeat "paved the way for the dynasty's downfall" Po p. 206. The eight plates are after sketches made during the battle and show several Chinese ships before and after they were sunk. The final sketch is of a dog which drowned while trying to escape from the Yangwoo the Chinese flagship. Octavo. With 8 plates tables in text. Hardcover orange cloth boards show quite a bit of scuffing and soiling along with edge and corner bumps/wear spine is darkened and sunned. The internal binding of the text portion of the book is good but the hinges show thin cracking at both boards. The book also contains 19th-century library markings: the front pastedown contains a label stating it was presented to the St. Francis Xavier Library of Gettysburg by Anna Dill Gamble and her signature also appears on the title page. The first end page also has handwriting present one being an 1870 Christmas gift inscription with something erased above it and the rear pastedown as a label pasted in stating "this book must be returned". The title page also has a faint embossed round seal presumably naming the library. The exterior is the main reason for the low condition grade but the interior binding makes this a suitable reading copy as the pages are still securely attached with no tears. There is foxing and spotting present but mainly the pages are just toned due to age with the exception of the two frontis illustrations which are quite foxed due to reacting to the tissue guard. Anna Dill Gamble was internationally recognized as an advocate for world peace and active in the women's suffrage movement. After her death she was nominated as one of the most influential women leaders in York County's history. <br/> <br/> Porter & Coates hardcover

Charles Hardie†in light pencil on front free endpaper. The binding is rubbed and worn at the edges shallow tear at head of spine else very good with light scattered foxing. A scarce attractively bound edition of Maria Roche’s best-selling Gothic novel. The firm of W.A. Leary & Co. is listed at 138 N. Second St. in Philadelphia directories from 1850-52 and one of the ads at the back is dated up through 1850 thus our attribution of the date circa 1850. W.A. Smith. This guide provides a historical account of Texas from the year 1878 with details of the climate topography weather and transportation. The work also includes a short biography of Thomas Wentworth Pierce. In the publisher's original cloth. Externally generally smart with marks to the boards slight fading to the spine and bumping to the extremities with very small closed tears to the tail of the spine. Rear hinge starting with minor marks to the endpapers and a two inch closed tear to the front free endpaper and a closed tear to the hinge. Internally firmly bound with slight age toning the odd closed tear and occasional light handling marks and spotting. Name stamp and one inch closed tear to front free endpaper. Lacking folding map.
