Proprio in questi anni, Proudhon, venduta la fallimentare tipografia di Besancon, fu assunto da una societa' di trasporti fluviali e li' inizio' a studiare il mondo dell'impresa e dei commerci e, contemporaneamente, ad approfondire i suoi studi di economia politica. Proudhon ipotizza che se i canali navigabili fossero monopolizzati dallo stato e i trasportatori in un numero fisso, come succede per le ferrovie, il prezzo dei trasporti fluviali potrebbe scendere di molto divenendo estremamente concorrenziale.

Il volume analizza le iscrizioni neo-ittite in luvio e in aramaico da un punto di vista stilistico-formale volendo evidenziare quali delle metafore, immagini, maledizioni documentate in questi testi possano trovare un qualche riscontro nei testi del secondo millennio a.C. Un ulteriore elemento di indagine in questo volume è costituito dallo studio del supporto scrittorio e dal rapporto tra testo e immagine, là dove il testo sia accompagnato anche da raffigurazioni. Anche in questo caso, il confronto con la documentazione di età precedente, anche se scarsa, appare estremamente interessante.

Attraverso l'uso magistrale delle sue fonti predilette - le testimonianze orali - Alessandro Portelli porta a compimento, con questo libro di sintesi, una ricerca storica di grande respiro, perseguita lungo il corso di quarant'anni: oltre duecento interviste che coprono almeno un secolo, dai più anziani, nati prima del 1890, ai più giovani, nati dopo il 1980. Tra la piccola dimensione urbana e l'incombente mole dell'impianto siderurgico, si muove il protagonista collettivo di questa storia: la classe operaia di Terni, forte delle sue memorie risorgimentali, legata a filo doppio alla nascita della grande industria, ai suoi complessi sviluppi, e alla fine alla sua crisi fatale. Due secoli di un'Italia che passa dall'universo rurale a quello postindustriale attraverso la storia, epocale ed effimera, complicata e a suo modo esemplare, della rivoluzione industriale e delle sue culture. Si assiste così, seguendo il racconto scandito dalla voce dei protagonisti, dapprima alla formazione di una centralità industriale che sembrava invincibile, e poi al suo declino, preparato dal sistematico smantellamento, pezzo dopo pezzo. Insieme alla fabbrica, è un mondo intero ad andare in frantumi, con il progressivo e inesorabile sfaldamento di un'identità operaia che aveva nella dimensione collettiva della condivisione e della lotta la sua modalità di espressione privilegiata.
