Not dated but there is the neat name of a previous owner on the front free end paper and this is dated 1838 which appears to be contemporary making this a very early edition. The front hinge is weak end paper split but the linen is holding and there are a few spots throughout the book but all in all a pleasing copy from the first half of the 19th century. Internally foxed ranging light to mostly moderate. 219 pp. 28 pp. publisher's catalog at rear. Firm binding text block fully intact with uniform edges and no loose leaves. One oblong albumen boudoir photo sized 7.75 x 4.75 in. mounted on 8 x 5 in. studio board manuscript annotations on verso in pencil & ink incorrect speculative dating of 1869 in quotation marks minor edgewear rubbing still VG exemplar. A splendid boudoir image capturing generations of William Campbell’s 1822-1920 family at the Salem Marion County Oregon farm sometime in the 1880’s. Bert Robert 1869-1858 and his sister May Mary 1871-1960 stayed and worked in Oregon before later moving to Portland OR. Pets were apparently important to the family as they have included 3 in their image and interestingly the photographer has also included a bowl of large ripe apples in the foreground before the group. n.p., unknown

Illustrated with 25 colour plates and one plain engraved plate of equipment small octavo pp viii 240 the text pages are very clean but the book is becoming very weak with badly cracked hinges the front hinge in particularly is badly sprung and the endpaper is protruding. Whilst most of the plates are good a couple are suffering from light foxing but a few others have suffered at the hands of a careless original colourist with the odd small splashmar and in one case a smeared image. Contemporary full calf rubbed and worn with the rear cover rather scuffed. From the library of Alan Roger of Dundonnell House in the Highlands; Roger had a notable garden there with many caged birds.
