124p. Frontis and full page illustrations by the author. Small 4to. Original full cloth binding. Inked inscription. First edition. Artist John Held, Jr. (1889-1958) created many of the cultural icons of the 1920s and '30's. It is due to him that the American Cultural mythology the 1920s conjures up images of bathtub gin, raccoon coats, and tall, impossibly thin, short-skirted "flappers." F. Scott Fitzgerald nicknamed the period "the Jazz Age" and wrote novels that chronicled the lifestyles of the young and fun-loving, but the era's most enduring visual images were created by John Held, Jr. Here he turns his satiric eye to dogs and their owners. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! 151 pages with black and white illustrations. The remarkable life-story of one of the most famous Great Danes of all time. Able Seaman Just Nuisance was formally inducted into the Royal Navy at Simon's Town in August 1939, shortly before the outbreak of World War II and his exploits during the war made him a legend in his lifetime. First edition in 1984 was written upon the 40th anniversary of Nuisance's death as a tribute to his old canine "oppo", and as a permanent record of a Great Dane with a unique place in the annals of war - and of dogdom. Prior owner protected the colour illustrated covers with glossy clear adhesive plastic which now affixes first and last leaves to their respective covers. Some writing atop title page else unmarked. Moderate wear. Contents lightly yellowed. Book
