In one he discusses someone's sighting of ghosts about which O'Donnell has written and the possibility of reprinting O'Donnell's work on werewolves in Penguin. In the other he briefly gives information about his family and anticipates an announcement with regard to the Bodley Head "in the New Year". The letter has the stamp of the "Receiver" so the announcement may well refer to the company's financial difficulties see W.E. Williams "Allen Lane" p.41 "bankruptcy" of Bodley Head. With: typed letter signed one page 4to to Clement Shorter Editor The Sphere 5 Nov. 1926 submitting Hesketh Pearson's "The Whispering Gallery" for review pointing out that the author is knowledgeable. Out of their trials and their repeated collisions against the hard realities of an America divided into Haves and Have-Nots evolves a drama that is intensely human yet majestic in its scale and moral vision elemental yet plainspoken tragic but ultimately stirring in its human dignity. A portrait of the conflict between the powerful and the powerless of one man’s fierce reaction to injustice and of one woman’s stoical strength the novel captures the horrors of the Great Depression and probes into the very nature of equality and justice in America. At once a naturalistic epic captivity narrative road novel and transcendental gospel Steinbeck’s powerful landmark novel is perhaps the most American of American Classics.</p> Penguin Audio USA hardcover
