19644822bdLondon: George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd. 1964. Octavo red boards hardcover 192 pp. Neat former-owner bookplate; otherwise Fine in a Near-Fine dust jacket with lightly rubbed edges. From dust jacket: The first powered flight by the Wright brothers in 1903 more or less coincided with the start of the century; and during the following sixty years the development of every kind of aircraft has gone steadily ahead. Air speeds have increased amazingly and space travel has suddenly turned from a science-fiction dream to a reality. It is with this modern period that the present book deals. It covers some of the most courageous exploits of the last war and some of the striking jet-plane and rocket-plane achievements which have been seen since the war; and it itells the story of recent space exploration from the tentative balloon exploits of the late 1950s to the Russian and American world orbits of the early 1960s. Nor is the airman’s friend the parachute forgotten: there is a chapter devoted to some notable parachuting experiences. The growth in aircraft and spacecraft has necessarily been a matter of great technical accomplishment. None the less technical development by iteself is nothing. What makes technical advances significant is the use to which men can put them. There is a useful place of course for books dealing with the mechanics of flight but the present book is about human exploits not about machines. For this reason it will perhaps have a special interest for the general reader particularly older boys and girls. George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd., 1964. hardcover books
