306 p. + Engraved portrait of Lamb + Publisher's ads in front and back (8p.). Foxed. 12mo. 20 cm. Nice original cloth binding embossed with an arabesque design in blind. Sir Thomas Noon Talfourd (1795-1854), became an intimate of Lamb's literary circle beginning in 1815. His able performance as an advocate and judge allowed him to devote himself for over forty years to his avocations - poetry, theater criticism, and literary good-fellowship. He was the executor of Lamb's will. The 'Memoir' which enthusiasts of Lamb owe to Talfourd was issued in two portions. The first, in 1837 under the title 'Letters of Charles Lamb'. The second was this work, published after an interval of eleven years. In England it was titled 'Final Memorials of Charles Lamb'. It consists mainly of letters to Coleridge and Wordsworth, with biographical comment by Talfourd. The two works were first incorporated in 1868, and have been frequently republished. First American edition. Lamb introduced Talfourd to Wordsworth with the comment that Talfourd was "my one admirer." **PRICE JUST REDUCED! W140

"Honour, family, and patronage refer to the fundamental values and institutions of a traditional community of Sarakatsani shephers in the Greek mountains. The community comprises six hundred mutually antagonistic and competing families whose members accept few moral obligations beyond the immediate family and a restricted circle of kin. In this fragmented society, unrelated men view one another with intense distrust. Inevitably, economic and civid cooperation are severly limited. A system of social values based on concepts of honour, strength, and pride guides the Sarakatsani away from apparent anarch in their communal life. Relations between the community and the wider Greek society consequently take specific forms of social and political patronage" Classic scholarly study of the lifestyle & motivations of the transhumant Sarakatsani shepherd community in Greece. 340 pages including index. Abundantly illustrated in black and white. "It was long the custom to regard local and even regional history as being of relatively little importance. But of late it has been recognized that if the generalizations that properly characterize broader studies are to be valid, they must often be based upon local sources that are frequently the only record of past events, changed conditions and vanished life-styles. The great number of local and regional studies now being published will result eventually in a much better and more perceptive general history of British Columbia, and, indeed, of Western Canada. 'Metis Outpost' is a prime example of such a source. Only its author could have preserved it for posterity. It is a little jewel in the treasure house of history." - W. Kaye Lamb, Former Dominion Archivist and National Librarian of Canada. Faintest wear. Bright, clean and unmarked. Wonderful copy. Book
