Bookplate to the front paste down of the Reverend Edward Francis Witts 1813-1886 who succeeded his father - the diarist Reverend Francis Edward Witts 1783-1854 - as the rector of Upper Slaughter.A new edition of this anthology of extracts of scenes and speeches from Elizabethan and Jacobean dramatists including works by Beaumont and Fletcher Jonson Marlowe Webster and others. With brief but compelling critical notes Lamb argues for the value of this period of drama which was somewhat neglected at the time. Charles Lamb 1775-1834 was a well-beloved essayist poet and antiquarian at the centre of a major literary circle in England. He is best known for his Essays of Elia and for Tales from Shakespeare co-authored with his sister Mary Lamb 1764-1847. In a full calf binding.
