Henry Russell was an entertainer and songwriter--arguably the leading popular singer on both sides of the Atlantic in the 1840s--who is best remembered today for his song "A Life on the Ocean Wave" and for such classics as "Woodman Spare that Tree! and "Cheer Boys Cheer!" A child performer as a singer he was born to a distinguished Jewish family and was already working in his teens as a musician and as a vocalist. Russell travelled to America in 1836 and established himself there as a popular singer and songwriter. Returning to England five years later he produced a number of musical programs which were among the most popular entertainments of the day. His songs went beyond sentimental themes and subjects to include purposeful social commentary attacking among other topics slavery and the mistreatment of the mentally ill. Russell's combination of showmanship and songwriting made him the Elton John of his day. Fullers Wood Press paperback

167615097London : Thomas Basset & Richard Chiswell 1676. 390 by 500mm. 15.25 by 19.75 inches. Sheet size 400 by 520mm 15.75 by 20.5 inches. Engraved map text on verso. Publishers Thomas Bassett and Richard Chiswell republished English cartographer John Speed's 1552-1629 popular 1611 atlas "The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britain" in 1676. As a supplement they included new section "A Prospect of the most Famous parts of the World" which contained maps engraved by Francis Lamb of the English colonies of New England and New York Virginia and Maryland Carolina and Florida and Jamaica and Barbados. This map separates Virginia and Maryland from New England and New York to show this area in greater detail and it also includes a small part of northern Carolina. It is the ninth and last derivation of John Smith's general outline of the area from 1612. The map is updated to incorporate details from Augustine Herrman's "Virginia and Maryland As it is Planted and Inhabited this present Year 1670". Although Herrman's publication bore a royal Privilege it did not protect the map from being copied particularly in the naming of the places and landmarks and a clearer delineation of the shore of the north-eastern part of the Chesapeake Bay. Hermann's map did not include specific borders however he did include a double line of trees showing the division of Virginia and Maryland on the Eastern shore from the 1668 border settlement which is also included on the present map. The text on the verso includes descriptive information on the region and is condensed from John Ogilby's "America". 1901003093London: Cassell & Company 1901. First Edition. Hardcover illustrated paper pastedown. Near Fine/Very Good. 4to. 29.5 by 22 cm. 40 1 pp. Leaves are folded in the Japanese manner giving the leaves a substantiality. In this one of Walter Crane's most famous works he freely draws upon the styles of dress from the Jacobean Georgian Regency periods as well as those from a vague Medieval past -- court jesters wizards etc. -- such as one finds in fairy tales some ball gowns more contemporary to him. The illustrations are a pageantry of color inspired by the work's fanciful progression of the calendar. This is a near exemplary copy of the work that was a part of the Forbes Magazine Collection which was a privately owned museum gallery. A discrete impressed stamp identifies it as such and it may thus be technically considered ex-lib although the provenance in this instance combined with its lovely condition would seem to enhance the copy. The dust jacket is an uncommon survival. Externally there is one minor corner chip and light wear besides. If one lifts the jacket off the book one will see an old edge tape repair that is best to leave as is. Cassell & Company hardcover
