19221142Boston: Private Printing. 1922. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Light toning around the periphery of the patterned cover paper front and back. Offsetting from the title page device and manuscript facsimile pages to adjacent pages: does not impede reading. A few leaves unopened. Small light wear to tail corners and tail of spine.; Facsimile manuscripts and transcriptions of a letter regarding roast pig written to William Hazlitt and a letter regarding friendship written to Robert Lloyd. Includes Lamb's classic essay A Dissertation Upon Roast Pig. This copy is a “Printer's Copy" from D. B. Updike's Merrymount Press which printed the edition. Lamb's friend William Hazlitt 1788-1830 was an English drama and literary critic philosopher and noted essayist. Despite the title page stating "A letter regarding roast pig" the letter only briefly acknowledges the receipt of a pig that Hazlitt had sent Lamb and the briefest postscript expounds on "the sweetest porcine odor." once it was cooked. The letter is primarily a chatty personal one with complaints of illness in the household "that damn'd infernal bitch Mrs. Godwin coming & staying so late." and a bit of local politics. The transcript of the letter is preceded by a separately printed 4-page facsimile letter in manuscript bound in. Lamb's friend Robert Lloyd 1778-1810/11 was an English bookseller printer and poet. Lamb was Lloyd's mentor during the latter's unhappy search for a direction to proceed in with his early life. Lamb says that one can get along without a friend but then the letter expounds on his philosophy of what friendship means in one's life. The transcript of the letter is preceded by a separately printed 4-page facsimile letter in manuscript bound in. Includes Lamb's humorous fictional essay A Dissertation Upon Roast Pig. The essay tells about the discovery that meat could be cooked after a house containing a pig burned down in ancient China. Much of the culinary experience is detailed in hyperbolic terms to humorous effect. Privately printed for bibliophile art collector and philanthropist William K. Bixby for distribution to his friends. Brief preface by Bixby. Printed at D. B. Updike's Merrymount Press this copy has Updike's device and is ink-stamped "Printer's Copy/Not In Edition" on the colophon. From a limited edition of 250 copies printed October 1922 set in Scotch-face types. Smith 561. Printed on mould made watermarked T & H paper. All edges trimmed.
