"Don't be silly Henry. There can't be!" Paddington Bear had travelled all the way from Darkest Peru when the Brown family first met him on Paddington station. Since then their lives have never been quite the same. . . for ordinary things become quite extraordinary when a bear called Paddington is involved. Unabridged and illustrated in glorious full-colour throughout this exquisite gift edition of the original story is truly to be treasured! It was Christmas Eve 1956 when BBC Television cameraman and freelance writer Michael Bond came across a toy bear sitting all by itself on a shelf in a London department store. He couldn't resist buying it for a stocking filler for his wife and they named it 'Paddington' after the railway station near their flat. Had it been any other kind of toy the story might have ended there. But with bears one thing often leads to another so when Michael wondered what might have happened had a real bear found itself alone on a big train terminus the muse struck and 'A Bear Called Paddington' was born. Fifty years and many millions of books later Paddington continues to touch the hearts of adults and children worldwide with his earnest good intentions and humorous misadventures. Michael Bond was awarded the OBE for services to children's literature in 1997 and in 2007 he received the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters from Reading University. Born in Newbury and raised in Reading he lived in London with his wife Sue and two guinea pigs named Olga da Polga and Vladimir. 324 pages including index and numerous interesting black and white photographic plates. Inscribed to "Number 32 Deepsea" by Author upon half-title page which bears many additional signatures including those of: David Forsyth, Bob MacLaurier, A.J. (Jack) Douglas, Bob Kennedy, Tom McGrath, A. McKeown, Gerry McCullough, Bill Wilson, and Lloyd Robinson. McCullough is mentioned in the book as a Lake seaman who went deepsea during the war and was, at time of publication, a full-time organizer for the International Transport Workers Federation and responsible for tracking down ships violating basic conditions and bringing them into line. His predecessor was Tom McGrath. Shotguns, Mounties, American gangsters, the courts and government - all were used by the shipowners to destroy the Canadian Seaman's Union. What was this union that provoked such an unprecedented attack? Combining rigorous research with the stirring recollections of the people who lived the events, Jim Green weaves a gripping story from the union's birth on the Great Lakes in the mid-1930s through the 1949 world-wide strike to save the Canadian merchant fleet. Some creasing to covers. Average wear overall to this special copy. Book
