I vertebrati sono specie animali di grande interesse ecologico poiché essi svolgono sovente ruoli chiave nelle dinamiche degli ecosistemi. Affascinanti sotto il profilo naturalistico per la diversità di forme, funzioni e strategie, molti vertebrati soffrono dello sconsiderato impatto dell'azione umana, dalla scomparsa o alterazione degli habitat al prelievo insostenibile, dall’introduzione di specie aliene alla diffusione di inquinanti. Le popolazioni di numerose specie di vertebrati sono perciò in declino e cresce il numero di specie localmente o globalmente estinte. Al fine di predisporre efficaci strategie di conservazione e gestione delle specie a rischio è anzitutto imperativo valutare il livello di rischio di estinzione a cui queste ultime sono sottoposte, così da concentrare sforzi e risorse sui casi più urgenti e individuare gli strumenti adeguati per ridurre o sopprimere le pressioni più significative così da ripristinare uno stato di conservazione soddisfacente. Questo è l'obiettivo primario della redazione delle Liste Rosse, che consistono nella valutazione critica dello stato di conservazione corrente delle specie presenti su un determinato territorio. Le Liste Rosse possono perseguire obiettivi relativi a scale geografiche e tassonomiche diverse. Il libro curato da Maurizio Fraissinet e Danilo Russo, ed edito dall'Assessorato all'Ecologia e alla Tutela dell'Ambiente della Regione Campania e dal Dipartimento di Agraria dell'Università Federico II di Napoli, analizza lo stato di conservazione dei vertebrati terrestri e d'acqua dolce che ricorrono sul territorio regionale. Si tratta del risultato di uno sforzo congiunto di diversi specialisti che da anni operano, per le rispettive competenze, in Campania. Oltre a fornire un'analisi razionale e, per quanto possibile, approfondita dello stato di conservazione delle specie presenti nella Regione, questa Lista Rossa si pone anche l'obiettivo di costituire un “punto zero” di riferimento per futuri studi, al fine di valutare più efficacemente i cambiamenti quali-quantitativi delle comunità dei vertebrati in relazione al costante processo di trasformazione antropica del territorio, anche in vista della necessità di impiegare le popolazioni animali quali veri e propri bioindicatori per perseguire l'obiettivo ambizioso, quanto ormai inderogabile di uno sviluppo realmente sostenibile. Com'è tipico delle Liste Rosse, questo studio ha anche un obiettivo divulgativo fondamentale: presentando la situazione reale delle specie a rischio sul territorio regionale si offre la possibilità di sensibilizzare un’ampia componente della cittadinanza campana, facendo conoscere la consistenza numerica, le minacce, le cause e le possibili strategie di tutela per ciascun taxon a rischio. Il libro di 160 pagine ricche di fotografie si presenta, infine, molto curato sul piano editoriale con splendide immagini e una buona grafica che lo rende di facile lettura. Illegal wildlife trade is driven mainly by the huge profits earned by the traffickers with comparatively low risk and low penalties make the trade highly lucrative. Unlike other conventional crimes, no stigma is attached to the offenders who commit wildlife crimes. During the past decade, wildlife trafficking, the poaching or other taking of protected or managed species and the illegal trade in wildlife and their related parts and products, has escalated into an international crisis. Each year, hundreds of millions of plants and animals are caught or harvested from the wild and then sold as food, pets, ornamental plants, leather, tourist curios, and medicine whereas a great deal of this trading is operated illegally threatening the survival of many endangered species. This study is designed to explain the basic structure of organised criminal group, their modus operandi and trade route; the prevalence of, and drivers leading to, wildlife trafficking; international laws and regulation, and the efforts of the non-government al organi zat i ons to influence the wildlife protection policy agenda”.
