Als der Frankfurter Arzt und Psychiater Dr. Heinrich Hoffmann 1809 - 1894 für seinen dreijährigen Sohn kein passendes Kinderbuch fand zeichnete und schrieb er kurzentschlossen selbst eines. 1845 erschien der erste gedruckte Struwwelpeter die englische Übersetzung folgte drei Jahre später. Jeder kennt die grausamen Storys jeder weiß was mit dem mäkeligen Suppen-Kaspar dem ungehorsamen Paulinchen passiert. Was aber geschieht mit dem Daumenlutscher ohne Daumen was mit dem vom Hund gebissenen Friederich. Michael Morris von Cultural Industry in London hatte die Idee den Struwwelpeter als "Junk Opera" auf die Bühne zu bringen. Wer nicht hören will muß sterben das ist die Konsequenz zu der sich Heinrich Hoffmann bei den meisten Geschichten im Struwwelpeter nicht entschließen konnte als er ihr "Unhappy End" offen ließ. 150 Jahre später hat Martyn Jacques die drastischen Droh- und Warngeschichten des Struwwelpeter zu Ende gedacht zu Ende gebracht. Das ist nicht nur schwarzer englischer Humor sondern auch eine Satire auf Elternliebe Erwachsenen-Rechthaberei und die inzwischen subtiler ausgeübte Pädagogik des Bestrafens. Als Dr. Heinrich Hoffmann seinen Struwwelpeter auf die Kinderwelt losließ schrieb man das Jahr 1845 und seinerzeit schienen Langhaarige Daumenlutscher Hyperaktive und kleine pyromanische Mädchen schon eine grausige Sache gewesen zu sein vor denen in lustigen und etwas bösen Versen gewarnt werden sollte. Aber wen interessiert das noch im Zeitalter von Dreadlocks Piercings und modischer Magersucht Die Engländer zum Beispiel. Der Sänger der Tiger Lillies Martyn Jacques nahm sich der Texte von Hoffmann an und kreierte eine "Junk Opera" die alle unhappy Ends zum tödlichen Ausgang zu Ende schrieb. So schwarz und gemein wie die Geschichten hat man auch die Bilder des guten Doktor weiterbearbeitet und jetzt ist der Struwwelpeter in all seinem Horror zu genießen. Die Texte wurden auf deutsch rückübersetzt nur ein paar kleine Änderungen gegenüber dem Original geben den Geschichten den letzten Biß. Wenn Konrad ohne seine Daumen verblutet Hans-guck-in-die Luft im Fluß ertrinkt und der Zappel-Phillip vom Tischbesteck erstochen wird kommt wirklich makabere Freude auf.
