In oblungo (23x16,5 cm); 31, (1) pp. e 16 c. di tav. (compreso il frontespizio inciso ed illustrato) con finissima coloritura coeva. Legatura editoriale coeva in piena tela verde con titolo e ricca scena animata impressa in oro al piatto anteriore, entro doppia cornice a secco (che si ripete anche al piatto posteriore). Prima edizione, non comune, e assai rara a reperirsi in queste più che buone condizioni di conservazione, di questa racconto illustrato da magnifiche tavole incise da Becquet e firmate “T.” del noto scrittore di racconti per bambini, fiabe e testi educativi di tipo naturalistico, Jules Rostaing. L’autore rielabora la storia del Marchese di Carabas, personaggio immaginario facente parte della fiaba “Il gatto con gli stivali”. Nella versione più classica, quella di Perrault, il protagonista è un ragazzo di umili origini al quale “il gatto con gli stivali” cambia il nome, inventando un titolo nobiliare, appunto di “Marchese di Carabas”. Moltissime sono le versioni della favola fra le quali sono da ricordare quella di Giovanni Francesco Straparola (nel 1566), poi Giambattista Basile nel Seicento, quindi il francese Charles Perrault e Ludwig Tieck, infine i Fratelli Grimm. “La storia ci porta sempre al castello dell'Orco-mago: il Gatto giura che appartiene al giovane povero. Secondo Perrault, il maniero è del Marchese di Carabas (o di Carabattole) … Il Marchese di Carabas è un parente stretto della maschera di Arlecchino della Commedia dell'Arte, nelle vesti di servo scaltro e truffaldino che fa la felicità e la fortuna del suo padrone e, quindi, anche la sua.”. Il testo è arricchito da 16 bellissime tavole illustrate a colori. Raro.

Exemplaire en condition très moyenne, le dos manque partiellement est a été consolidé avec de la toile, la page de garde manque, marques de possesseurs en page de faux-titre et en page de titre, MAIS l'eau-forte de Manet est bien présente, ce qui de loin, n'est pas toujours le cas.
