This example is no 58 of a limited edition of just 250 copies. Condition is generally very good with a just a little wear. The edges are a little more worn with perhaps a nick or two but this would be concealed with a mount no noticeable wear within the print area. A very good copy of this impressive print. From the library of Eric Hosking OBE Hon FRPS FBIPP 1909-1991 was widely acknowledged as one of the world's most eminent natural history photographers "Perhaps the most famous bird photographer ever to have lived" Gemma Padley. He was pioneering and developed new techniques especially the use of flash photography and automatic shutter release technology which enabled him to photograph birds at night and freeze birds in flight for the first time. Famously when just 28 he lost an eye to a tawny owl while climbing up to a hide in rural Wales the event which inspired the ingeneous title of his autobiography "An Eye for a Bird" 1970. Over his exceptionally long career he photographed over 1800 species and his pictures have appeared in some 1000 books including the popular New Naturalist series of which he was photographic editor. Brightwell became a Fellow of the Zoological Society of London in 1906 and a member of the Marine Biological Association in 1922. During the first half of the twentieth century he was commissioned by these associations and other museums to make scientific drawings of various forms of life including extinct animals. Brightwell's first illustrated book A British Dog in France was published in 1913. During the First World War 1914-1918 he served in the British Army. After 1920 Brightwell established himself as a major illustrator and as an author. Books written and illustrated by him include A Cartoonist among Animals 1921 On the Seashore 1934 The Zoo You Knew 1936 Neptune's Garden 1937 The Dawn of Life 1938 The Garden Naturalist 1941 The Zoo Story 1952 and Down to the Sea 1954.His cartoons often appeared in the Punch Magazine. . unknown
