494 pages. Apparently rebound in black half-leather and blue/gold marbled boards and endpapers. Index. "In 1899 a treaty with the Indians of the great Mackenzie basin followed the report of a Senate select Committee, chaired by Sir John Schultz; but, owing to the absence of roads and markets, and other essentials of civilized life, not to speak of the vast unsettled areas of prairie to the south, the incoming, until now that the railways are projected, of any great body of immigrants was very wisely discouraged, and this in the interest of the settler himself. The following narrative, therefore, has lain in the author's diary since the year of the expedition it records." - Preface. Numerous black and white photographic plates including tissue-protected frontis. Attractive colour fold-out map dated 1900 depicts the areas encompassed by Treaty No. 8 and the Indian tribes therein. Top edge gilt. Contents clean and unmarked. Tight and square with moderate external wear. Wallace p.54, Lande 1332, Peel [3] 2463. Book

A very good copy with wonderful illustrations. From the library of Eric Hosking OBE Hon FRPS FBIPP 1909-1991 was widely acknowledged as one of the world's most eminent natural history photographers "Perhaps the most famous bird photographer ever to have lived" Gemma Padley. He was pioneering and developed new techniques especially the use of flash photography and automatic shutter release technology which enabled him to photograph birds at night and freeze birds in flight for the first time. Famously when just 28 he lost an eye to a tawny owl while climbing up to a hide in rural Wales the event which inspired the ingeneous title of his autobiography "An Eye for a Bird" 1970. Over his exceptionally long career he photographed over 1800 species and his pictures have appeared in some 1000 books including the popular New Naturalist series of which he was photographic editor. Hosking was not only a photographer of birds but also a highly knowledgeable ornithologist. Edward Lloyd Limited Hardcover
