Johnston, who provides a good historica perspective and some interesting comments on the natural history of Central Africa. 'Dr Christy has been a persistent and successful hunter but it has been mainly in the cause of science. The Belgian museums, the British and perchance the Americans have been the richer for his prowess'. The author travelled extensively in the region over a 25 year period and describes the Ituri Forest of the Congo in detail in this work with much on the Ituri Pygmies, the Okapi, elephants, rhinoceros, buffalo, the forest hog, chimpanzee, the Bongo, the aardvark and ant-eaters, birds, insects, fish, reptiles, frogs, forest hunting and armament, the poisoned arrow gun, etc.
3 vols., roy. 8vo., Mixed Impressions, with 3 coloured frontispieces, very numerous coloured and monochrome photographs throughout and endpaper maps in the last two volumes, small contemporary signature on front endpaper of first two volumes; pictorial cloth, backstrips lettered in black, a very good, bright, clean set in mildly worn dustwrapper (one wrapper clipped). The trilogy comprises Born Free. A Lioness of Two Worlds. With Extracts from George Adamson's Letters. Preface by Lord William Percy. Foreword by Captain Charles Pitman, (thirteenth impression, 1961); Living Free. The Story of Elsa and her Cubs. Introduction by Sir Julian Huxley, (first edition, 1961); Forever Free. Elsa's Pride, (first edition, 1962). Bright, crisp set of George and Joy Adamson's account of their pioneering conservation project involving three generations of lions in Kenya's Serengeti in the late 1950s/early 1960s. The first volume formed the basis of James Hill's 1966 Oscar-winning movie of the same name starring husband and wife team Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers. So involved did McKenna and Travers become that they founded independently the Born Free Foundation which flourishes to this day.
