Else tight and sharp.

Scarce first edition of this remarkable exhibition catalog of Graham's photos of the Kellams a couple who lived alone in a tiny house in remote corner of Maine. Nicols provides a remarkable essay exploring why a couple would remove themselves so completely from society: "Forty years of solitude.of winter storms and late springs and hungry mosquitos.of canned sardines.of reading to each other." Indeed for book lovers a particularly engrossing portrait of bibliophilia with numerous images of the couples' books and library. This catalog was to lead to a two-page article in the New York Times on Feb. 13th 2003 which itself led to the sale of all available copies of this remarkable collection. It remains scarce to this day. A 2007 reprint of this book by Boxed Books includes all the same images but substitutes Fox's essay with the NYT article. Pond Press paperback books

2009171623Shizuoka: Izu Photo Musuem 2009. Hardcover. VG/VG- wear to dj edges and corners and some scuffing and rubbing to dj. Gray boards with black stamped lettering. BW-photographic dust jacket with gray lettering. 151 pp. BW and some color illustrations. A collection of photographs that pay homage to the work of photography pioneer William Henry Fox Talbot. Titled "Photogenic Drawing" these photographs were printed from paper negatives produced by Talbot 170 years ago. Sugimoto ihas effectively played variations on the original scores provided by Talbot's negatives transferring to a different medium images that would otherwise disappear and be lost to obscurity. "Lightening Fields" are prints in which the light is burned directly by applying electrical current to the film. The inspiration for this technique comes from "aborted discharge" experiments by Talbot. To create "Lightening Fields" Sugimoto ran electric current directly over the film and printed the results. This series is also related to Talbot inasmuch as it recalls the experiments that he carried out in his scientific work - and eventually discontinued - with electrical discharges. Text in Japanese and English. Izu Photo Musuem hardcover books
