Elizabeth Fox Tuckett 1837-1872 was the sister of the well-known English alpinist Francis Fox Tuckett 1834-1913 who regularly gathered a party of friends and family to accompany him on climbing expeditions. Elizabeth had a talent for drawing as well as a love of travel and produced four popular light-hearted books of which this was the first chronicling her adventures in the form of humorous sketches. Neate T66. Some creasing to cloth corners rubbed occasional foxing lacking rear free endpaper; overall about very good. Inscribed in light pencil on the front free endpaper "With heartfelt good wishes for the/New Year E.F. Tuckett iIllegible place name Dec. 30 1869." In addition Tuckett has written out the full names of the members of the expedition on the "Dramatis Personae" page where they are identified in print only by their initials. Rarely found signed. First edition. 4to. 4 pp. Aside from a few faint pinpoint spots of foxing this is a fine as new copy. Housed in a custom made cloth chemise and slipcase titled in gilt along the spine. Shortly after the presentation of his paper before the Royal Society on 31 January 1839 Talbot at his own expense printed the text as a pamphlet of 14 pages; "Some Account of the Art of Photogenic Drawing."became the world's first separate publication on photography. Through this process an ordinary piece of writing paper was immersed in a sensitizing solution dried placed in a camera and exposed in daylight to a subject for upwards of an hour or longer. Upon examination a tonally reversed rendering of the subject was visible. It was then soaked in a solution of salt and washed and dried then the process was essentially repeated exposing the first print to the new sensitized sheet reversing the tones to produce an image with the tonality as in nature. Through a series of further experiments over the next months Talbot discovered that a "latent" image always existed and that through chemical development it could be brought to life. This allowed for speeding the exposure in the camera to be cut to a mere 30 seconds and the enriched chemical solutions would produce a sharper and tonally richer image. This process he first called the Calotype from the Greek kalos - beautiful. <br/><br/>On June 10 1841 Talbot presented the Calotype process at a meeting of the Royal Society and at his own expense he published a four page description of his process. Unlike his earlier publication on Photogenic Drawing here he states in detail the full process. <br/>Upon the urging of John Herschel and David Brewster he began to call his process the Talbotype rather than Calotype. His intention was to license this process and likely this printed description was printed to distributed to potential licensees. <br/><br/>Aside from changing the name from Calotype to Talbotype in the title of this publication and the slight alteration in the printer's imprint the text of the two issue are identical - the word Calotype remains in the body of the text This is the foundation stone of the negative-positive process that has been in use since it was first published.<br/><br/>This printing is much rarer than the Calotype variant with WorldCat locating only Harvard University - Houghton Library and Cornell University. Bound in contemporary pebbled morocco gilt lettering and rules back with all ten titles in miniature marbled end papers. 1899005358Oxford England 1899-1904. Half Leather. Very Good. Madcap "salad days" from back when! 4to. 30 by 25.5 cm. Unpaginated 20 pages with caricatures mounted onto card rectos. Additional blank card and a number of drawings that are loose some of which were probably always so. In total 91 separate pieces of overwhelmingly caricature of varying size and ranging from simple portraits exaggerated in one way or another as called for by the medium to multi-character cartoons or depictions of a scene with dialogue bubbles and captions. The caricatures center around but are not confined to the doings and personalities of Merton College Oxford. A few of the portraits would appear to be of Theodore Roosevelt for example. Many but far from all of the mounted caricature illustrations are signed or credited although we think it is quite likely that pseudonyms were used as was obviously the case with "the Freak". The album is quite unusual then in its creation with multiple contributors something common in a friendship or amicorum album which this decidedly is not. We would surmise that the contributors were members of an informal club of artistic anarchists. The quality is not entirely even as might be expected from such an effort but overall the caricatures are vivid and amusing with quite a few displaying true artistic cleverness. Rebacked in matching calf. Wear to the corners and edges. Some scrappiness to interior. Paste marks where there once were a few mounted pieces. <br/><br/> hardcover books

Marbled paper over boards 20 cm x. 25.5 cm cloth backstrip handwritten paper label on upper board; approx. 200 lined pages about 2/3 of which are full of handwritten notes and illustrations; nice card slipped into a sleeve on the inside front board from Bausch & Lomb Optical Company illustrating the mechanical features of the microscope of one side side and the path of light rays on the other. Begins with 34 exceptionally detailed framed in a circle as though viewed through a microscope drawings of different views of teeth and gums in varying states of health or decay including: Tooth Development 70-75th Intra Uterine Life Nasmyth's Membrane Longitudinal Section of Tooth Crown Showing Histological Features of Enamel Hypoplasia of Enamel Abnormal Enamel and more. Followed by extensive handwritten notes under the heading presumably the course title "Oral Surgery Dr. Cameron" and listing Earl Padgett's "Surgical Diseases of Mouth and Palate" as the text. A nice volume. Handwriting and illustrations are nice and legible throughout in blue or black ink. Instructor's discreet stamp reading "APPROVED F.J." here and there. Bennet--clearly an ardent and well-connected sportsman as most of his sketches are portraits and caricatures of well-known hunting men and women of the day many of whom are identified. These include a portrait of Lord Jersey who Nimrod called "perhaps the most elegant rider for hounds the world has ever seen" and many others. The drawings are skilfully executed and are often amusing.
