First edition. This particular work was written by Charles James Fox. Unfinished at the time of his death in 1806 the work was first published posthumously two years later. Fox was a notable member of the Whig party who was vocal in his disregard to the monarch George III. With a illustrated frontispiece of the author being a drawing a taken from a bust by the sculpture by Joseph Nollekens. The work explores the early years of Jame II's reign being of particular not at the last Roman Catholic Monarch of Great Britain. His reign was fraught with controversy in regards to his religious stance which resulted in friction between parliament and the monarchy and his eventual deposition. The work features a introductory chapter to which is added a appendix. In a full straight-grained morocco binding. Externally generally smart. Light rubbing to the head and tail of the spine to the joint and extremities. Indentations to the leather of the rear board. Light offsetting and spotting to the front and rear endpapers. Rear pastedown has a small amount of loss to the extremities and is beginning to lift from the rear board. Evidence of worming to the rear endpaper and rear blank towards the fore edge. Internally firmly bound. Pages generally clean with only some minors spotting the frontispiece and light offsetting to the title page caused by the frontispiece. Featuring an engraved portrait frontispiece of Charles James Fox. With an appendix to the rear. Charles James Fox was a prominent British Whig statesman. Many Foxites in the long wilderness years in opposition turned to the writing of history for consolation and vindication. Fox was no exception. In 1799 he began work on a project that would be published in 1808 as A History of the Early Part of the Reign of James II. It was researched in London and Paris with many French and English friends being recruited to help with particular manuscript collections. The work was never completed. The published version deals only with the events of 1685. Fox had hoped to go beyond 1688 in order that the virtues of William III should cast the vices of James II into even greater relief. DNB. Rebacked in calf with the original boards laid down. Externally rubbed. Internally firmly bound. Some scattered foxing and damp staining to the frontispiece and titlepage. Contemporary quarter calf marbled boards spine divided by double gilt rules and lettered in gilt direct edges sprinkled blue. A touch of spotting pastedowns toned. Slightly rubbed a touch of wear to bottom edge. Armorial bookplate of Sir James Montgomery of Stanhope to pastedown. One of the ordinary-paper copies of this overweening flop: left unfinished at Fox’s death the manuscript was acquired by William Miller for an unprecedented sum and rushed into print in two printshops simultaneously. William Savage printed the ‘ordinary’ copies as here though still generously-margined while large- and extra-large-paper examples were produced by Bulmer using an entirely different setting of type. Several decades later the print run had yet to sell out and Miller barely recouped his investment. Fox’s actual writing an oratorical attack on the Stuarts from a Whiggish perspective based on original research in French and British archives was somewhat overshadowed by the excitement. Fox started the work in 1799 but failed to complete it by his death in 1806; his nephew Lord Holland edited and published it. The History which covers up to 1685 "was the product of much original research and provided a fresh interpretation of the man and his methods which in many respects is thoroughly vindicated by modern scholarship. Fox was interested in the deeper underlying causes which helped to precipitate James's fall rather than in his personality itself. He thought that he had discovered these in the nature of the restored monarchy" Callow p. 10. The work was issued in demy quarto on "common paper" £1 16s in royal quarto on wove paper £2 12s 6d and in elephant quarto £5 5s. Here the frontispiece is marked "proof" and has an ink correction "marked his censure" to "marked his mind". With the bookplate of Peter Leopold 5th Earl Cowper 1778-1837 to the front pastedown. Large quarto 348 x 281 mm pp. 3-4 xl 293 3 cli 1; bound without half-title and terminal advertisements. With portrait frontispiece by William Skelton from a bust of Fox by Joseph Nollekens. Carss & Co. bookbinders in Glasgow on the verso of the fly-leaf. First edition. Fox began work on this text in 1799 with his large network of friends known as Foxites assisting with research. The book was published posthumously by Fox’s nephew Lord Holland who also served as editor. Fox had initially intended to treat events past the year 1688 in order to compare the virtues of William III with the failures of James II. However as he never completed the text the work ends at 1685. For him James’s reign represented a core issue within English culture and politics. As a Whig his history of England as encompassed in this work reflects is an ongoing struggle between the absolutist intentions of monarchs and the struggle of their subjects to assert their liberty. Indeed Fox he was a leading proponent of religious tolerance and individual liberty. His incisive analysis along with a detailed appendix of correspondence between Louis XIV and M. Barillon on English affairs as well as between the Earl of Sunderland and the Bishop of Oxford continues to be an important resource for historians.<br /> <br /> Fox 1749–1806 was a prominent Whig politician and historian. His career spanned almost forty years and over that time he developed some of the most radical politics seen in Parliament. For example as a vocal opponent of George III he dressed in the colors of George Washington’s army. He was also an abolitionist supporter of the French Revolution and advocated for religious tolerance.
