Among the most widely adapted of the beast fables the tales of Reynard the Fox originated in the 12th and 13th centuries with early versions in French Dutch Latin and German being notable. Caxton printed a translation based on a Flemish text in 1481. The character of Reynard an anthropomorphic fox and trickster has since become almost an archetype in the literatures of several languages. ESTC R24532 & R218371 & R40614. WING S3513 & M2912 & S3436. Lacks third table.
George Fox was a founder of the Religious Society of Friends commonly known as the Quakers or Friends. He rebelled against the religious and political authorities by proposing an unusual and uncompromising approach to the Christian faith. He traveled throughout Britain as a dissenting preacher. He was often persecuted by the authorities who disapproved of his beliefs. This work was edited by Thomas Ellwood an associate of John Milton. Interestingly this journal omits the dissent within the Quaker movements and the contributions of others are largely excluded. Historians have used it as a primary source because of its wealth of detail on ordinary life in the 17th century and the many towns and villages which Fox visited. Jones Rufus Preface of Jone's version of Fox's journal 1908.
Ellwood describes Fox as zgraceful in countenance manly in personage grave in gesture courteous in conversation." Peen says he was "civil beyond all forms of breeding". We are that he was "plain and powerful in preaching fervent in prayer" "a discerner of other men's spirits and very master of his own".
