18516Archive of 12 silver gelatin photos pasted to dark grey board and clipped from original photo album of WWI era soldiers and jockeys partaking in horse racing. Measurements are 3" x 4" with the photos themselves measuring 2.5" x 3.25". Horses were vital in military usage during the First World War and played a major role economically as they reached their peak of 21.5 million by 1920. Between the First and Second World Wars the importance of the horse in commerce and agriculture began to decline. Whilst this was going on the sport of horse racing continued to grow in popularity perhaps partly as a result of this general decline. Horse racing was one an international favorite sporting pastime with dozens of courses all over the world. This photo archive shows a particular race in motion with jockeys who seem to be competing with a group of WWI soldiers in officer caps and uniform. Photos have minor wear to edges and corners. Overall in very good condition images are crisp and clear. unknown

235548 June 1764. Paper 24 x 14cm edges frayed not affecting text sl. grubby tipped on to sl. larger paper. Text secretarial: "Received June the 8th. 1764 the contents of the Within order not present Witness John Dupont". Signed "Bolingbroke". Note: ""Bully" as he was called by his contemporaries is best known for his extravagant lifestyle and the racehorses he bred. On 8 September 1757 he married Lady Diana Spencer4 elder daughter of Charles Spencer 3rd Duke of Marlborough after making a joking proposal to her in one of London's pleasure gardens. Bolingbroke's insistence on maintaining a bachelor's lifestyle which included lavish spending a string of mistresses heavy drinking and gambling after their marriage coupled with verbal and possibly physical spousal abuse led to a bitter separation between Bully and the popular and artistic Lady Diana. Bolingbroke brought divorce proceedings against his wife for her criminal conversation with Topham Beauclerk with whom she bore a child. The Bolingbroke divorce is notable for being streamlined compared to similar proceedings and thus is credited with easing the way for noble divorces in the 19th century." [8 June 1764] unknown

It is particularly oldest collection in the Museum's holdings and was the first oldest collection in the Museum's holdings and was the first important gift to the Museum under its first director." "The collection is also significant as a historical document of Sioux Indian art and culture. Its unique historical value stems from the fact that its collector had an intrinsic interest in documenting the material culture of the Sioux. The artifacts he collected were items of traditional workmanship fashioned by Native Americans who still pursued the way of the life of their ancestors. University of Vermont hardcover
