Large octavo xii 139; vi 115; and vi 95 pages with a total of 296 illustrations from wood engravings many printed in two colours plus a folding colour plate at the end of the second section. Half roan and watered cloth lettered in gilt on the spine; covers rubbed at the extremities a little heavier on the spine which is also faded and a little marked; free endpapers a little discoloured around the edges by the turn-ins; slight damage tiny tears punctures or chips caused by a playful kitten to the leading margin of the last ten leaves and the bottom margin of about 40 other leaves five with an early paper repair on the verso and about ten lightly shaved; occasional light scattered foxing; overall a very presentable copy. Professor Robert Wiedersheim 1848-1923 contributed to the second section and edited the third section of this classic study on frogs by Alexander Ecker 1816-1887 professor of anatomy and physiology. Wiedersheim succeeded Ecker on his death as the director of the University of Freiburg's Institute of Anatomy and Comparative Anatomy. <p>Provenance: Professor Vernon Victor Hickman 1894-1984 a distinguished Tasmanian zoologist internationally recognised for his research on arachnids with his ownership signature in pencil on the front free endpaper.
