197831306Northampton MA: Cheloniidae Press 1978. Fine. State Proof. One of only a few copies printed for Robinson's Masters Thesis Show in 1978. With title state proof and signature in pencil on the lower margin. This striking black and white print of Robinson in turtle armor and with an image of a turtle and its skeleton next to him anticipates his founding of the Cheloniidae Press the following year. Cheloniidae is the name given to a family of Sea Turtle species. Robinson is shown in profile up to his shoulders and his turtle armor on his head and body given him the air of a Renaissance man. The turtle images are meticulously and realistically depicted. Image is 17.5 x 23 inches on heavy paper measuring 21 x 27 inches. In fine condition. ORIGART/073117. Cheloniidae Press unknown

The illustrations consist of 26 wood engravings by Alan James Robinson with the names of the birds hand-lettered by Suzanne Moore. Copy #11 of 50 the Deluxe Edition of a total edition of 231 printed by Harold Patrick McGrath and SIGNED by Robinson. Folio 10-3/8" x 15-7/8" the exact untrimmed size of the First Folio of 1623 bound by Claudia Cohen and Sarah Creighton in full gilt-lettered rust morocco with marbled endsheets by Faith Harrison in a custom cloth clamshell box with a gilt-lettered large morocco spine label. Designed by illustrator Alan James Robinson and Arthur Kinney who wrote the text. Illustrated with 54 wood engravings depicting the birds and beasts and one wood engraving as well as an etching of Shakespeare. This is copy #I of 5 special proof copies of a total edition of only 131 printed by Harold Patrick McGrath on Cheloniidae rag made specially for the Press the first paper to carry a Cheloniidae watermark and SIGNED by the illustrator on the colophon page. With an extra suite of the engravings and etching each SIGNED and numbered by Robinson plus another suite issued only with the limitation of 5 containing two working proofs of each wood engraving and three state proofs of the etching all SIGNED by Robinson.
