Histoire naturelle générale et particulière was originally published in French between 1749 and 1789 ultimately extending to thirty-six quarto volumes issued during Buffon"s lifetime with additional posthumous volumes continuing the series. Illustrated with twenty-seven coloured plates and a monochrome portrait frontispiece. Collated complete. Volume II of Buffon"s celebrated natural history one of the most ambitious and influential attempts to survey the natural world produced during the Enlightenment. This expanded English edition contains sections devoted to birds fishes reptiles insects and exotic plants incorporating later discoveries by prominent naturalists. Translated from the French by William Smellie. In a contemporary full calf binding. Externally worn. Front board detached but present. Rubbing to boards with the odd minor scratch. Chipping to calf. Small repair to calf of rear board. Creasing to spine. Slight rubbing and bumping to extremities resulting in slight loss to calf. Previous owner's ink inscription to front free endpaper. Internally firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean if typically age toned with the odd light spot heavier to first and last few leaves and fore edge. The last volume in this set includes 'Traité de l"Aimant'.This was an incredibly important resource on the subject of natural history in eighteenth century France providing a wealth of information on all living things.'Histoire Naturelle des Mineraux' was a departure from the rest of Buffon's 'Histoire Naturelle' set as 'Mineraux' was not illustrated. Buffon collaborated on this series on minerals by Andre Thouin Barthélemy Faujas de Saint-Fond and Louis Bernard Guyton de Morveau.Stamp of 'St. Hugh's Parkminster' to the title pages. St Hugh's Charterhouse is the only post-reformation Carthusian monastery in the U.K. a Gothic Revival structure founded in 1873. In the original calf binding. Externally generally smart.
