C'est en 1785 comme il venait d'être nommé avocat général au Parlement de Paris que Hérault de Séchelles alla voir l'éminent savant à Montbard où il resta deux jours à observer et interroger son hôte. Dans cet récit piquant l'orateur à la mode dresse un portrait domestique et familier du vieil académicien d'une plume irrévérencieuse mais aussi chaleureuse où perce au-delà d'un persiflage affectueux une sincère admiration.
