This is a fierce piece of anti-communist propaganda issued by the Journalists Association of Lombardy. Among the contributors are Marinetti "Futurismo Antibolscevico" some of the main personalities of the fascist state and their Nazi allies. 35799Paris Imprimerie Royale 1770-1785. 18 volumes in 18. Large 12mo 18.0 x 10.5 cm. Text with 264 engraved plates. Uniform contemporary half calf over speckled boards. Spines with five raised gilt-ornamented bands; compartments with gilt floral patterns and two morocco labels in red or brown short title and black part number. = This is the complete bird section volumes 14-31 usually found separately of Buffon's Histoire Naturelle générale et particulière published by the Imprimerie Royale from 1749 to 1804 in 44 volumes. Nissen only quotes 262 plates. The plates are after De Sève and depict the birds in their natural surroundings including nice architectural design. Some light shelfwear one spine label with some loss; some slight foxing in the text plates clean. The last two volumes published four years after volume 16 in a slightly different binding see pictures. A nice set in beautiful contemporary almost uniform bindings. Passe-partout size 45.8 x 33.0 cm. = Portrait of the famous French naturalist George Louis Leclerq or le Clerq Comte de Buffon 1707-1788 whose influence on popular natural history remains apparent to this day. Claude Baron made the engraving under the supervision of Jean Germain Drouais 1763-1788 the French historical painter and portraitist Baron also worked for Buffon engraving many birds and mammals for his publications. The printed surface is 20.0 x 16.1 cm. A few small marginal smudges otherwise very good. unknown

Condition: This original 18th century copper plate engraved map is toned with some very modest foxing but in very good overall condition. There are tears to the right margin and folds as issued. Dimensions: 24" x 24" Details: This map was published to accompany Buffon's treatise on magnetism and magnets This "Map of declinations and inclinations of the magnetized needle drawn up according to the table of magnetic observations made by travelers since the year 1775" shows geomagnetic variation. Although it has at times been attributed to La Perouse the map and those published with this one predicted his voyage and include information from observations made on the voyages of Cook de Bougainville Carteret and others. . . unknown

Maroon full leather covered boards with gitl tooling to covers and gilt tooling and titling to spine gilt inside dentelles and all edges gilt. Illustrated with 100 engraved plates including frontispieces and engraved title pages for both volumes. Rubbing to spines and extremities of boards with some very light bumping and light wear to corners. Gift inscription dated 1835 to first blank page of Volume 1 followed by a second gift inscription dated 1941. Previous owner's name in pencil on front free endpaper of Volume 2. Foxing to frontispiece and title page of each volume with some additional mild foxing to initial and final pages. Interiors otherwise clean and unmarked. All 100 beautifully engraved plates present with 44 plates in Volume 1 and 56 plates in Volume 2 with some of the plates being marked "Proof". Both bindings are quite sound and have silk bookmarks bound in. Originally published between 1749 and 1788 as "Histoire naturelle generale et particuliere" in 36 volumes Rev. Hutton's abridgement of 1821 was a much more affordable yet still informative and beautifully illustrated version of Buffon's monumental work encompassing much of the three kingdoms of nature.
