Collationné complet de toutes les planches requises. Reliure demi-veau rouge strictement de l'époque. Dos lisses orné doré "romantique", plats de papier marbré, petits coins de parchemin. Très belle série homogène. Rousseurs habituelles pour cette publication, plus ou moins importantes selon les feuillets, la majorité des feuillets sans rousseurs néanmoins, les planches sont bien fraîches avec peu de rousseurs pour la plupart. Quelques piqûres de vers sans gravité.Texte sur deux colonnes en petits caractères. Cet ensemble complet en 9 volumes comprend 4 volumes de Matières générales, 2 volumes pour les Quadrupèdes et 3 volumes pour les oiseaux. Buffon (1707-1788) est surtout notoire pour son Histoire naturelle, générale et particulière, avec la description du Cabinet du Roy, rédigée sur près de 50 ans, à Montbard d'abord dans son cabinet et à la Tour Saint-Louis, puis en sa bibliothèque du Petit Fontenet en 36 volumes parus de 1749 à 1789, plus huit autres après sa mort, grâce à Lacépède. Il y a inclus tout le savoir de l’époque dans le domaine des « sciences naturelles », appellation large regroupant aussi des disciplines qui ressortent aujourd'hui de la science des matériaux, de la physique, de la chimie ou de la technologie. C’est dans cet ouvrage qu’il relève les ressemblances morphologiques entre l’homme et le singe, quoi qu'il pense ceux-ci dénués de pensée, ce qui les diffère profondément de l'Homme. L'édition Duménil que nous proposons ne contient pas les poissons et autres suppléments de Lacépède etc. Très bel exemplaire dans une très jolie reliure romantique décorative et solide de l'époque.
