A complete set of Comte de Buffon's Natural History General and Particular.Named the "father of all thought in natural history in the second half of the 18th century" by Ernst Mayr Buffon worked on this series for some fifty years. Thirty-six volumes came out between 1749 and 1789 followed by 8 more after his death thanks to Bernard Germain de Lacépède.It includes all the knowledge available in his time on the "natural sciences" a broad term that includes disciplines which today would be called material science physics chemistry and technology. Buffon notes the morphological similarities between men and apes although he considered apes completely devoid of the ability to think differentiating them sharply from human beings. Buffon's attention to internal anatomy made him an early comparative anatomist.Vols I-II cover Theory of the Earth; Vol. III covers History of Man; Vols. 1785SET48-H-1London: W Strahan and T Cadell 1785. Leather. Good. 8.5" by 5.5". Various. Nine volumes of this popular of natural history. Scarce in this particular translation especially in this complete state. A very good early translation of this classic work in a lovely original binding. Some hinges needing attention but still great to see in this binding. Clean and bright internally. Natural History General and Particular discusses several differing species in the animal kingdom from Apes to the Hippopotamus. Volume IX is a corrections and additions volume providing lots of further information. There are 307 illustrated plates across all volumes conveying numerous animals such as dogs cats and elephants. Collated complete with all plates. Comte de Buffon was a French author and his natural history was originally published from 1749-1804. It spanned to an encyclopedic collection of 36 quartos. This English translation was published prior to the to completion of this work. The work ended up being limited to the animal and mineral kingdoms. This translation has numerous notes and observations by William Smellie a Scottish encyclopedist and naturalist. The Second Edition of this translation. In full tree calf bindings. Externally generally smart with patches of rubbing to the spines joints and extremities. Split to the front joint of volume I. Front hinge to volume I is tender with cords showing. Small loss to the head of spine to volume I. Rear joint to volume I is starting but firm with the hinge tender. Hinges to volume II are starting but firm. Front joint and hinge to volume III have failed and board is detached. Front endpaper has also detached. Rear joint and hinge to vol III is weak and may detach with further handling. Loss to the head and tail of spine to vol IV. Front joint and hinge to volume V are tender with cords showing. Rear joint to vol V is starting but firm with the hinge slightly strained but firm. Front joint and hinge to volume VI are strained. Loss to the head and tail of spine to volume VI also. Both joints and hinges to volume VII are tender with cords showing. Loss to the head of spine and joints to volume VIII. Front joint and hinge to volume VIII are strained but firm. Front hinge and joint to volume IX are weak and held by one cord only. May detach with further handling. Small crack to head of rear joint to vol IX resulting in the hinge being strained but firm. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown with the monogram C R. 1812032746London : T Cadell and W Davies; R C and J Rivington; et al 1812 A very good set of this 20 volume edition with black and white frontispiece 2 folding maps and 681 hand coloured plates. With an account of Buffon's life by William Wood. It is rare to find this set with hand colouring. In contemporary full speckled calf bindings that have been rebacked to provide new spines with gilt-lined raised bands and title and volume labels. The original boards have scuffing and pitting and there is light wear at edges and corners but the bindings are in very good clean condition. Endpapers are marbled and some of the front pastedowns have a scuffed area indicating the removal of bookplates. 2 of the volumes have the armorial bookplate of the Right Hon. Sir Robert Peel Bart who was Prime Minister 1834-5. and 1841-6 and is viewed as the founder of the modern British police force. The contents are in very good condition with occasional light spotting generally at the top margin and offsetting from the plates. The occasional plate and text page is toned. All the volumes have 2 initial and final blanks a half title and title contents listings and directions to the binder. All have the original page marker torn in one volume. In this set Vol VI has 2 plates numbered 152 and 2 numbered 158 with different animals; Vol VII lacks one plate 211 and Vol VIII lacks plate 252 but has 2 numbered 254 different animals.
